Hello learners and parents! I’m so excited to start this new class and have fun exploring the exciting world of fiddle music with you! In this ongoing fiddle tunes club we’ll be looking at a different tune each class. This class will start out being scheduled biweekly (every other week), with plans to be weekly ultimately. The tunes we will be doing will be coming from a wide variety of fiddling traditions, such as bluegrass, Appalachian old-time, Canadian, Cape Breton, English, Irish, Shetland, Scottish, Cajun, and Western Swing. There will also be some folk songs thrown in as well. We will learn breakdowns, reels, jigs, hornpipes, waltzes, and many more tune types. Each week prior to class I will post the sheet music and a slow-version recording for the tune for that week in the classroom. To accommodate learners at different skill levels I may at times post two versions of the same tune (an easier beginner version and a slightly more advanced one) and let them choose which one to learn. This class is geared towards learners at a later beginner level through intermediate. It is best if they have at least six months to a year of experience playing the fiddle/violin for this class. If your learner is an absolute beginner or wants a more personalized experience please check out my 1:1 classes https://outschool.com/classes/11-fiddleviolin-mandolin-lessons-bluegrass-old-time-celtic-FLfEaZlL?usid=0UuhWEjL&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link This class is not intended as a substitute for 1:1 lessons. Mandolin players are welcome as well! Some examples of the types of tunes we do in this class are: Southwind Chinquapin hunting Mairi’s Wedding Cherokee Shuffle Willafjord Black Mountain Rag Hull’s Victory Cripple creek The Blackest Crow Childgrove Muddy Roads Down Yonder Rock the Cradle Joe Grandfathers clock Sugar Hill Willow Garden Devil’s Dream Hunting the Buffalo Salt Creek East TN Blues Up jumped the Devil Bonaparte Crossing the Rhine Chicken Reel Wabash Cannonball Inisheer Barlow knife Cabri Waltz Coming through the Rye Steamboat Quickstep Squirrel Hunters Old Spinning Wheel Sally Ann At each class the learners will take turns playing the tune for the previous week if they want to, before we turn our attention to the new tune posted for the week. If time allows at the end of each class learners will also be given a chance to play a tunes of their choice for the rest of the class. This is a judgement free class, learners are not expected to keep pace with each other, and content does not build. The goal is simply to foster a love of fiddling and enjoy sharing it with others!

I grew up on a farm in Tennessee (USA) and in addition to music I also love raising rabbits, gardening, and reading! I and my husband currently live with our five beautiful children in the state of North Carolina. I am excited to be part of the Outschool family!
Music has always been a big part of my life, starting with classical piano, which I began at age 8, taking private lessons from a professor at the University of Tennessee. Later on, in my teens, my interests shifted to strings and traditional Appalachian and Celtic music. I learned from many people, including bluegrass musician Justin Moses and as a student of Jim Wood at the Jim and Inge Wood School of Music. As a young adult, I worked as a volunteer interpreter at Cade’s Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, teaching park visitors about Appalachian music. I have played professionally for weddings and other events, in restaurant house bands, as well as at the Museum of Appalachia in Norris, TN. I have led traditional music demonstrations for public school classes, in addition to teaching privately for many years.
I am passionate about introducing young people to traditional Appalachian and Celtic music and helping them perfect their skills!
I primarily teach fiddle/violin and Appalachian old-time and Celtic music, but also bluegrass, Western swing and Texas contest-style fiddle. I also play guitar, both standard and Celtic (DADGAD), piano, mandolin, recorder, penny whistle, mountain dulcimer, ukulele and Irish bouzouki.
I see each learner as a unique individual and cater my teaching approach to best suit their needs and interests.
