This is a collaborative storytelling game where a group of learners/adventurers can flex their imagination and create a world, an adventure, and the characters in it together. The aim of this course is to play a simplified version of Dungeons and Dragons to take the emphasis off the rules of the game and instead emphasize collaborative storytelling through creative problem solving, open-ended puzzles and social interactions. This approach allows the students to get creative in how they approach problems and have agency in the outcome of the adventure even if they are a first time player. NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!

Class Structure:
Students will begin by selecting a provided premade character or creating a character from scratch. They will introduce their characters by describing their character's appearance and personality to the group and discussing how their group came together. Next, we begin drawing a map together. Every student will have an opportunity to draw a new location on the map that will act as our game world, and we will work together to name those locations. We then create gossip and rumors about the world to bring it to life. Each player will create a rumor that starts with "I heard..." to add intrigue to the locales on our map and find our call to adventure through those rumors(Example: I heard their is a dragon who lives on the tallest mountain). After that we pick a location for the group to start their quest to uncover the truth of the established rumors. The players now have the chance to roleplay their characters as they meet others along their journey and overcome trials along the way.
Metas de aprendizaje
Roleplaying games are a wonderful tool for simulation training. Through roleplay students will have opportunities to practice self advocacy, collaboration, conversation, creative problem solving and behavioral training. Their character's provide opportunity for externalization, perspective taking, and empathetic insight while providing a natural reinforcement for pro-social interaction. This course aims to empower students by building social confidence and improve self regulation by failing forward, learning improvisation and overcoming obstacles.

Orientación para padres
Role-playing games rely on player input and creative collaboration. This sort of play relies on player's perception of a fantasy world which lends itself to pulling from stories associated with kingdoms, dragons, and magic. This can sometimes include fantasy violence using their character's "weapons" or magic" as in such works as Adventure Time, Harry Potter, and Lord of the Rings. This fantasy violence will never be directly depicted but in-game violence may possibly be discussed as they encounter creatures such as shadow monsters, mechanical constructs, or rodents of unusual size. Non-violent solutions will always be possible as potential alternatives.

Greetings! Salutations! Ahoy! and hello! I am Gavan Kennedy, a tabletop role-playing game instructor with a level 20 enthusiasm for developing life skills and social growth through play and facilitating the bonds and memories that come from collaborative storytelling.

DEVELOPING LIFE SKILLS AND SOCIAL GROWTH
Dungeons and Dragons is a wonderful tool for developing social-emotional learning skills. Through role-playing games I aim to provide a space for learners to be creative, communicative, and cooperate with each other. I focus on fun interaction for newfound friends, utilizing the learner's imagination to create the world and adventures within while helping students learn empathetic skill building, cooperation, problem solving, communication, and frustration tolerance by celebrating successes and learning from failures.

CREATING A FUN STORY FOR LEARNERS AND BY LEARNERS
What sets me apart from other D&D instructors is my focus on asking questions to build a fantasy world using the suggestions of the players. Every adventure setting is crafted by the players' suggestions to create a unique setting all their own. This exercise emphasizes the imagination of the learners in order to share a fun and exciting adventure tailored just for and by them. By combining their complimentary skill sets can learn to rely on each other and discuss plans of action to solve problems. Additionally, every action in D&D has a chance of failure but failure is not the end. One of the greatest teachable lessons is that a failure is merely a step toward a greater success. Through this philosophy I aim to fill the learners stories with fun and adventure while they learn life skills they can take with them on any of life's adventures!
