Experiencia de clase

Welcome to private voice lessons with Blue Cat Music! Students ages 10 and older and all ability levels are welcome to join the class to learn more about singing and apply new techniques to their favorite songs. One-on-one interaction with the instructor each week will ensure that students will receive constant feedback on their singing. Whether your learner has taken voice lessons before or are just getting started, this is a great way to learn new techniques, recognize notes, and explore a variety of music styles to become an even better singer.

The first few classes will run as follows:

Week of 1/23/23: Getting to Know Student, Sing a Familiar Song
Instructor and student will spend time getting to know one another. The instructor will make a note of the student's goals for lessons. Then the student will select one song of their choosing to sing. The student and teacher will workshop the selected song throughout the class. This song will explore techniques fully introduced in the following lessons.

Week of 1/30/23: Warmup
After determining the student's goals, the teacher will teach various warmups that address the student's objectives and needs. In addition to these warmups to prepare the voice for vocalizing, these warmups will include exercises that develop pitch and note recognition. Finally, the teacher and student will collaboratively select repertoire. The repertoire chosen will focus on pitch and note recognition.

Week of 2/6/23: Posture/Breathing
The teacher will demonstrate how posture and breathing affect singing. Next, the student will learn proper singing posture and diaphragmatic breathing. Diaphragmatic breathing will be addressed by focusing on inhalation and exhalation of air. Finally, breathing and posture techniques will be applied to the selected repertoire.

Week of 2/13/23 : Vocal Placement
The teacher prepares students for vocalizing through various warmups. Then, additional exercises are introduced that help the student decipher the difference between head, chest, and mixed voice. Finally, a simple song will be taught that invites the student to explore the various vocal placements.

Carlehr Swanson (vocalist, pianist, speaker) is a 2nd year Ph.D. student in Music at the University of Virginia. She is a graduate of George Mason University and the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami with degrees in Jazz Vocal Performance. Before college, Carlehr accompanied and directed multiple church choirs. She credits this experience as significantly influencing her musicality. Upon entering college, she realized the absence of gospel music in higher education. Consequently, she co-founded and directed the Frost Gospel Ensemble. Giving back to her community and connecting with others has been an important theme in Carlehr's life, as she brings people together to serve the greater good. She is the founder and director of the organization "Music is Unity," where she takes music performances to people who may not experience them otherwise. Throughout this year, she has
planned and performed more than a dozen virtual events for the community. In 2017 and 2022, Carlehr was 3rd Runner-Up (2017, 2022) in the Miss Virginia Organization and was named the People's Choice (2017). She continues sharing her social impact initiative, "Music is Unity.” Carlehr's career highlights include performances with Shelia Jordan, The Manhattan Transfer, and The New York Voices. Carlehr's greatest dream is to leave every place better than she found it.
