Most people have learned that CH says /ch/, but what about words like “school” and “machine?” I teach all the sounds made by the two-letter phonograms as opposed to teaching the one most common sound. Additionally, I teach them in the order they occur most often. Trying to sound out the word “chef?” Try the first sound of CH /ch/ /e/ /f/. Is that a word you know? Try the second sound of CH /k/ /e/ /f/. Does that make sense? Try the third sound of CH /sh/ e/ f/. Yes! That is a word you know and it makes sense. By learning the 75 basic phonograms that represent the 45 English sounds, along with spelling rules, we can decode 98% of English words. There is no falling back on exceptions and no memorizing sight words. This ongoing, one-on-one tutoring course is for learners who know the sounds of the alphabet and are continuing their reading journey or looking for more support. Learners will work on developing phonemic awareness skills through investigative lessons that include multi-sensory activities and music. The goals for this course is for students to be able to recall sounds for 21 multi-letter phonograms, apply 8 spelling rules, apply 3 silent final E rules, develop fluency and comprehension, and enhance vocabulary. Each lesson will follow a similar structure. • Greeting • Phonemic awareness practice • Introduction to new phonogram • Phonogram song • Handwriting • Phonogram review game • Spelling analysis • Comprehension and fluency • Wrap-up and farewell Once learners have met all learning goals, they are ready to graduate to our next course, “One-on-one Learn to Read Series: More Two Letter-Phonograms.” Why does the word “cape” have a silent final E? Join me for my next class to find out!
