Ready to go on an adventure and brave the streets of Philadelphia during the Yellow Fever outbreak of 1793? In this class, we will follow along with Mattie Cook as she fights the fever and tries to reunite her family in their beloved coffee shop...and we will learn a bit about the real Yellow Fever outbreak as we go along! This is a novel study class, where students will read the assigned chapters ahead of time and we will come together each class to discuss what we have read and share what we have worked on for homework. Each class we will begin with a guided discussion of what we have read, then we will take a few minutes to catch up on new vocabulary words, the students will share their one sentence summaries for each chapter, and we will work on our assigned in-class work together. Along with discussing the novel, we will also learn about the real life historical figures that are mentioned in the book and we will learn some historical tidbits about the epidemic. This class relies on student participation and it is often hard to participate in a meaningful way in the chat, so microphone use will be required for this class. For class students will need to have a physical, digital, or audio copy of Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson. Students will be given a study guide to use during class prior to the first class. We will be using the pages of the novel study guide both in class and for the homework and students will need to print portions of the guide. **The reading assigned for each class should be done prior to coming to class! We will be discussing the listed chapters each class meeting, so the student needs to have read them prior to class time.**

This novel covers the effects of a disease and includes descriptions of some of those effects, such as vomiting or blood. There are not many instances of this, but if your child is sensitive to this you may want to read aloud to them so that you can skip or censor those parts.
