Experiencia de clase

Nivel de inglés: desconocido
Grado de EE. UU. 7 - 10
In this 5 week novel study, students will go over techniques and ways of thinking that apply to any novel they may encounter in the future. This includes...

- Properly annotating a novel with important lines, thoughts of their own, and key questions.
- Considering the role(s) of setting, relationships, and pivotal events in a character's journey.
- Using annotations and developed understandings to focus on and understand key themes presented throughout a novel.

Classes will be focused on skills and activites that build upon independent reading done by students on "off" days. Thus, there will be a reading schedule for kids to follow and keep up with so that our time can be used for activities that build up and enhance our understanding of the novel.

Welcome, Annotating, and More!
This lesson is all about a bit of background information for this novel, how we run things in class, and most importantly, how we annotate or show our thinking as we read. We will discuss taking literal, inferential, and question types of notes and the role that they play in understanding a novel overall.

Lección 3:
Reading Day + Setting Discussion
Once we make our way though the novel some more, we will pause to discuss the importance of setting in this novel and how it can relate to overall theme. We will then read some more or even re-read with specific kinds of annotations in mind - annotations that focus on how setting changes the protagonist and how settings in real life change real life people.

Orientación para padres
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian is a really phenomenal book for teaching tolerance and connection to other people. However, in order to do so, Sherman Alexie does confront some serious topics such as racism, homophobia, sex, drug use, and violence. Through the novel's adolescent protagonist, these topics are handled with both humor and earnest nuance. I highly suggest reading the novel yourself (most adults can rip through it in two hours or so) or reading the common sense media page to get a better idea about specifics. Like I said, even though the book confronts these topics unwaveringly, I and many, many others see this aspect as an asset rather than a detriment to the novel's positive messaging.
Requisitos previos
Ideally, students should be able to write short answer paragraphs. I am happy to help with this in office hours, but I do not spend lots of time on this particular skill so that we can get through the book. Message me if you have concerns!
Lista de útiles escolares
A copy of the book - digital or paper (ibooks and amazon both have editions) - and three sets of sticky notes.

This book has a special place in my heart; it is the primary class I am teaching for a reason. I taught English on the Rosebud Indian Reservation for over three years, and this book was a highlight for many of my students. It is so funny and enlightening for young people, and I believe that my lived experience on the Rez can really help bring this book to life.
