The History Herald: Monsters and Creatures of History, Myth, and Legend

Extra! Extra! Learn All About It! In this ongoing course, students will travel back in time to explore the mysterious, dangerous, weird, and unique monsters and creatures that make up the stories of history, myth, and legend.

Did you know that Werewolves were actually honored knights in Scotland?

Did you know that leprechauns used to wear red and not green?

Did you know that there is only one Phoenix alive at a time - and all phoenixes come from the one before it?

Each class will investigate a creature or being from the past and study the stories from various cultures that have incorporated it into their own beliefs, myths, and folklore. Students will be introduced to a different creature by bringing the tales of old myths and legends to life. Short descriptions and tales will be presented to the student while visuals and activities are done.

Then the class will engage in discussion to talk about beasts, beings, monster or creatures, the cultures of the people who created the lore surrounding it, how different cultures view them, and modern-day representation of each creature.

Students will also have the opportunity to "rank" each creature in class using the class rank handout to determine the "threat" level of each creature. Students are encouraged to keep these and create their own creatures guide!

Students are encouraged to draw and color their own versions of each creature if they would like and will have the opportunity to share their work if they like!

I have been challenging and elevating students for over 10 years to delve deeply into the issues of our past and wrestle with the realities of our present and future. Each conversation will be open and honest but guided with the necessary care for students of this age. I believe it is our job as educators to not teach children what to think- but how to think and allow them to unearth the truths that are often hidden within the words of pages.
