Experiencia de clase

Students will learn classic Greek myths through an engaging and expressive style of storytelling. Mythology enthusiasts and complete novices are equally encouraged to attend, as this class will both cover the basics and often go beyond the traditional telling of the myth. Students will spend most of the time listening, but will have ample time for comments, questions, and sharing the connections they make with these myths.

Since many students are new to mythology or to a particular story, I do ask and enforce a NO SPOILERS policy. Students are welcome to share other versions of a particular myth that they've heard, but only AFTER I've told my version of the story. Thanks for adhering to this policy!

Some weeks will have optional activities or craft ideas posted in the Classroom - these are always optional (never required) and students can feel free to share their work in the Classroom as well. Each week has a Greek Word of the Day that associates with the myth (students who attend regularly will experience repeats here). I will show the word using both English letters AND the ancient Greek spelling as well!

Each lesson is freestanding - no prior experience necessary. Most lessons are comprised of one longer story, but others are theme-based mythological lessons that include a collection of shorter stories all related to one mythological theme or character.

Orientación para padres
These stories contain man-eating monsters (one of which exists because a human lady fell in love with a bull...), creepy visits to the underworld, death, dismemberment, kidnapping, fighting/bloodshed, deceit, kids blatantly disobeying parents, and more. I have adapted the stories to make them exciting and age-appropriate in terms of the language and "mature" content, but I'm not turning these into Disney movies - I will retain as much of the authentic myth as possible with child-appropriate language. Also, it’s worth noting that some events in myths are just plain WEIRD. I do my best to make these stories make sense to a modern audience while retaining the integrity of the Ancient Greek way of thinking. If you’re ever concerned about a story’s content for a particular week, feel free to message me in advance and I can give you a breakdown of the events.
Lista de útiles escolares
I recommend keeping a pen/pencil and paper during class to jot down any questions and save them for designated Q/A times. This is, however, not a requirement.
Recursos externos
Los estudiantes no necesitarán utilizar ninguna aplicación o sitio web más allá de las herramientas estándar de Outschool.
