Experiencia de clase

This club is to give students skills in communication as they will discuss their favorite characters (heroes and villains), the story's plot, the concept of a quirk hero society, and literary themes from the show My Hero Academia. This club is mainly for the anime, but I do read the manga where learners are welcome to talk about the manga as well. This will be establish in each group whether we talk about the anime only or also the manga since the manga is not completely animated yet.
Each meeting will include topics involving quirks, a specific story arc, sharing fandom art, and playing games together. Every student is welcome to cosplay (whether in costume or DIY costumes) and share themed merchandise. This club is to help give friendship and a community for the love of My Hero Academia. Each group will be different as meetings are based on what learners wish to discuss for that week. Once a group is established (usually after 3-4 weeks of meetings), then the group can share other anime and include other topics in the discussion.

First month topic: Character
This month will include questions centered around the characters of My Hero Academia. This includes questions such as:
"Who is your favorite character and why?"
"Who is your least favorite character and why?"
"Which characters do you think are overrated/underrated?"
"Who is the best hero?"
"Who is the best/most dangerous villain?"
e.t.c

Second month topic: Quirks
"Which quirk is the best quirk for everyday life?"
"Do you think quirks effect a character's personality in who they are and what they do?"
"What is or would be the least effective quirk for hero work?"
"Why do you think characters in the story think some quirks are better than others?"
"If you had a quirk, which one would it be and why?"
e.t.c

Third moth topic: Story Progression
"How does each attack from the villains effect the students in Class 1A and their motivations in becoming heroes?"
"Which characters are parallels for each other, how does this help compare and contrast in who they are?"
"Do you agree with the villain's ideals of the corruption in hero society? Is All Might the only "true hero" as Stain deems him to be?"
"Should UA high school continue to hold festivals with the rise of villains attacking the school?"
e.t.c

Please know that the point of this class is to create an inclusive community for learners to feel safe in expressing their thoughts and opinions, encourage them to ask questions, and help them learn social and critical thinking skills. The questions listed above are only a small amount of example questions that can be posed to the students about the show and there are a variety more that can be discussed. Meetings may start on one topic but may change depending on what learners want to talk about. Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

**IMPORTANT: Please know that this is an ongoing class. That means that payment is a weekly subscription for each week that there is a meeting. Some sections are BI-weekly to allow more variety of schedules. Please be mindful of the dates for the section you sign up for. Learners are welcome to join or leave the group at any time.**

About Mrs. Rutan:
My name is Madelynn Rutan and I am a literary enthusiast, lover of cats, pianist, and travel buff. I have been to 14 countries throughout my life and hope to continue to travel even more. I love learning about different cultures, backgrounds, and people which I believe is very important in helping people understand each other. Most of all, I love English. Specifically, I love books, reading, and analyzing literature to expand one’s world and mind. I believe you can travel anywhere and learn anything through books and desire to share these experiences with your children. I mainly hold book discussions and book analysis for my classes through a Socratic seminar approach and mini-lessons. This allows more time for the students to learn from each other, talk about the book, and gain a love of reading with a guided expert. After all, what’s more fun about loving a new book than sharing it with others.
I have read throughout my life and could always be found in a library (including today as volunteer staff at a local library). When I am not teaching or reading, I enjoy watching various anime shows; playing games such as Pokémon, Zelda, and Animal Crossing; sewing, cross-stitching, taking care of my pets and spending time with my husband.

Education:
My love for books led to my bachelor's degree in English language and literature studies from Brigham Young University-Idaho. My expertise includes literary analysis (specifically with British and American Literature) and helping learners read for understanding and enjoyment. I wish to continue my education towards a master's in librarian science to become a librarian to help children find their own love for books.
I also earned a minor in TESOL which included classes on curriculum development, teaching with technology, and teaching philosophy. I tutored for 2 years at my college tutoring center as an ESL, writing, reading strategies, and study skills tutor. I used to teach as an online ESL teacher for kids ages 3-12 before switching to my own ESL and ELA classes here on Outschool since 2020.

Teaching Philosophy:
I value the need for a student-focus classroom and encourage an uplifting atmosphere for my students. I always make sure my students are heard in class and are encouraged to speak their thoughts and ideas. Classes will have a recommended age and content warning of topics discussed or talked about to ensure appropriateness for students within the class. I encourage parents to reach out with questions for any class.

Missed Class/Refund Policies:
Ongoing: Full refund with 72 hour advanced notice; Partial refund with 24-72 hour advanced notice
Multi-day & One-time: Please read class listing; I am always open to work on a make-up day, but you are not guaranteed a refund for a missed class.

Minimum Enrollment Policy:
Ongoing classes must have at least 2 people enrolled for classes to begin.
Multi-day and one-time classes will continue even if there’s only one student. Parents will be contacted 48 hours before if they wish to transfer to a later section for potentially more students or possibly continue as the only learner. Last minute sign ups are always possible but not guaranteed.
