Students will come together for a weekly discussion of the latest chapter in the My Hero Academia manga. Please know that this class is for the MANGA and NOT the ANIME of the series. If you wish for a class of the anime, please look for my MHA social club class about the anime. The discussions during each meeting will be based in this order: 1. Story Progression - how does the new chapter build or add new detail to the story; as well as any predictions of what will happen next 2. Character development - how does the events in the chapter affect, change, or sustain who the characters are 3. Art - how does the style of the art depict the character's emotions, change the mood of the story, and/or help in symbolism with the themes of the story. 4. Overall thoughts/opinions of the chapter It is an open-discussion based class where students will be able to express their thoughts/opinions in the formatted order listed above. This format is to keep a concise structure for learner-directed discussion during a 25 minute class. Students are expected to read the chapter before class, otherwise be subjected to spoilers for the series. The chapter numbers for the week will be published in the classroom on the Sunday before the next meeting. The chapters are published each Sunday and once a new chapter is published, it is notified of when the next chapter will be published and I will then message in the classroom when there's a schedule due to a later publishing date. This allows anyone to know when there's a week skipped in publishing of the chapters. Please note that the author sometimes skips a week with publishing a new chapter, in which case, there won't be a meeting for that week and that the last week of the class may change due to publishing constraints. There might be a week skipped, but there will only be 16 class meetings in total. The class will start with the most recent chapter and will continue until a total of 16 weeks. I do not know when the story of My Hero Academia will end; however, it is heading towards the end of the series so the class may or may not end with the ending of the series. This class is meant for students to come together in excitement to discuss the progression of the series and be able to express their thoughts of the current progression. Students are able to access the chapters either with the free app Shonen Jump or the website https://www.viz.com/shonenjump/chapters/my-hero-academia. Both the website and app are free for the 3 latest chapters and the first 3 chapters of a manga series. Refund Policy: Students who miss a week are not subject for a refund. Partial refunds are given only in emergency situations; otherwise forgetting to attend class does not entitle a refund. Parents will be notified a week in advance if there's a week skipped in publishing, otherwise, it will be continued as scheduled for each week. Please see Outschool's refund policy if there are any technical issues.

About Mrs. Rutan:
My name is Madelynn Rutan and I am a literary enthusiast, lover of cats, pianist, and travel buff. I have been to 14 countries throughout my life and hope to continue to travel even more. I love learning about different cultures, backgrounds, and people which I believe is very important in helping people understand each other. Most of all, I love English. Specifically, I love books, reading, and analyzing literature to expand one’s world and mind. I believe you can travel anywhere and learn anything through books and desire to share these experiences with your children. I mainly hold book discussions and book analysis for my classes through a Socratic seminar approach and mini-lessons. This allows more time for the students to learn from each other, talk about the book, and gain a love of reading with a guided expert. After all, what’s more fun about loving a new book than sharing it with others.
I have read throughout my life and could always be found in a library (including today as volunteer staff at a local library). When I am not teaching or reading, I enjoy watching various anime shows; playing games such as Pokémon, Zelda, and Animal Crossing; sewing, cross-stitching, taking care of my pets and spending time with my husband.
Education:
My love for books led to my bachelor's degree in English language and literature studies from Brigham Young University-Idaho. My expertise includes literary analysis (specifically with British and American Literature) and helping learners read for understanding and enjoyment. I wish to continue my education towards a master's in librarian science to become a librarian to help children find their own love for books.
I also earned a minor in TESOL which included classes on curriculum development, teaching with technology, and teaching philosophy. I tutored for 2 years at my college tutoring center as an ESL, writing, reading strategies, and study skills tutor. I used to teach as an online ESL teacher for kids ages 3-12 before switching to my own ESL and ELA classes here on Outschool since 2020.
Teaching Philosophy:
I value the need for a student-focus classroom and encourage an uplifting atmosphere for my students. I always make sure my students are heard in class and are encouraged to speak their thoughts and ideas. Classes will have a recommended age and content warning of topics discussed or talked about to ensure appropriateness for students within the class. I encourage parents to reach out with questions for any class.
Missed Class/Refund Policies:
Ongoing: Full refund with 72 hour advanced notice; Partial refund with 24-72 hour advanced notice
Multi-day & One-time: Please read class listing; I am always open to work on a make-up day, but you are not guaranteed a refund for a missed class.
Minimum Enrollment Policy:
Ongoing classes must have at least 2 people enrolled for classes to begin.
Multi-day and one-time classes will continue even if there’s only one student. Parents will be contacted 48 hours before if they wish to transfer to a later section for potentially more students or possibly continue as the only learner. Last minute sign ups are always possible but not guaranteed.
