We will begin class with a quick review of the five senses. What are they? How do we experience them? As a class, we will develop lists of words you could use to describe each sense when writing. For example, words to describe touch might be soft, rough, or bumpy. We will then read sentences together and the children will be asked to determine which sense is being expressed. Discussion will center around the words that helped the children identify the sense in each sentence. Having had the benefit of several examples, students will be shown pictures and asked to share sentences based on one of the 5 senses to describe it. Then, the real fun will begin. Using an organizer (provided upon registration), students will look closely at a picture of his/her favorite place and brainstorm words that describe that place while keeping in mind the 5 senses to guide thinking. We will share the wonderful words with each other as a class. The students will then be charged with writing an 6-8 sentence paragraph about his/her favorite place using the sensory words on the completed organizer. This will be done on a final draft paper (provided upon registration) with teacher guidance throughout the process. Students will be encouraged to use wonderful descriptive words in order to help his/her reader feel that they are experiencing the favorite place as well. Class will close with each young writer sharing his/her final piece.

* Each child should bring a photograph of his/her favorite place to class. (Often people think vacation spots, but this could be a reading nook in the home, a backyard tree house, Grandma's kitchen, etc.) * An organizer and final copy paper that will be provided in PDF form. These will post with the welcome message.

I am thrilled to offer a wide variety of classes. You will find classes that focus on the conventions of writing, sentence building, paragraph building, and even grammar courses. No matter what stage of development your young writer is in, you will find something in my course offerings that will move him/her to the next level. Having fun while writing is imperative so my courses will focus on topics that are unique and fun for children.
Young learners might enjoy my class of songs and finger plays and various pre-math and pre-literacy offerings! I love to have fun and be silly with little ones.
I possess a BS and MA in Early Childhood Education and have been an educator in private independent schools for 31 years. I have taught children ranging in age from preschool to third grade. There is something magical about every stage of development and tapping into that magic to help young children soar is what fuels me.
I have found a great combination of nurturing and firmness that enables my students to have fun while learning in a welcoming environment. Learning must be meaningful and engaging while still having structure and expectations. This combination will be found in all my Outschool classrooms.
When not teaching I am an avid spectator of my daughter's softball games , encouraging my son with special needs to learn to ride his bike and use his voice output device, and reading. I recently read an entire 375 page book in one day!
