This Level 1 Music Theory class is great for students looking to explore musical concepts. Learners should have completed either my Intro to Music Theory class, or be able to read music in both treble and bass clef. If you are unsure whether your learner is ready for this class, please reach out to me. Lessons will be presented using a piano keyboard as reference, however students do not need to know how to play to complete the class. Each unit will include listening/ear training activities, as well as a written assessment. Week 1: Major scales and Key Signatures - We'll discuss how we build major scales and key signatures. We'll also discuss how key signatures help us to identify scales. Week 2: Chromatic Scale, Intervals, and the Circle of Fifths - We'll discuss how to build a chromatic scale on any note. We'll also look at basic intervals, and how we can use intervals to build a Circle of Fifths. Week 3: Intervals and Transposition - We'll continue our discussion of intervals, discussing how to identify major, minor, augmented, diminished, and perfect intervals. We'll then use that knowledge to help us transpose music from one key to another. Week 4: Mid-Class Review - This class will be used to answer any student questions and review any areas of concern so far. Week 5: More Note Values and Time Signatures - This class will introduce sixteenth notes, sixteenth rests, and dotted eighth-note rhythms. We'll also take a look at the difference between Common Time and Cut Time. Week 6: Even More Note Values and Time Signatures - In this class, we'll discuss 3/8 and 6/8 time signatures. We'll also introduce eighth-note triplets Week 7: Triads - We'll begin building triads, focusing on Primary chords and the Dominant 7th Chord Week 8: Final Review and Preview of Next Course

I hold a Master's Degree in Oboe Performance from the Bob Cole Conservatory of music at California State University, Long Beach. At the Cole Conservatory I had the privilege of studying oboe and English horn with Carolyn Hove. My Bachelor's Degree, also in Oboe Performance, is from the Hartt School of Music of the University of Hartford in West Hartford, Connecticut. While there I studied with oboist Humbert Lucarelli.
I have extensive experience teaching private and group lessons, including lessons in Oboe, Piano, English Horn, Reed Making, and Music Theory. My students have gone on to win scholarships and place in honor orchestras across the country. I am also a current member of MTAC (Music Teacher's Association of California), and my students are eligible to complete their Certificate of Merit program.
Locally, I have performed with the Dana Point Symphony, Symphony Irvine, as well as other groups around Southern California. Previously, I was a long time member of the Cheshire Symphony.
