En este interesante taller de escritura, los estudiantes se centrarán en la escritura de opinión, informativa, narrativa y poética. Los estudiantes leerán un pasaje breve sobre el tema de escritura de la semana. Luego, los estudiantes practicarán habilidades de escritura esenciales mediante el uso de un organizador gráfico, la formación de párrafos, la práctica de habilidades de edición y la incorporación de palabras descriptivas a su escritura.

Learners can join in anytime! Please note, this is not a guided reading class (meaning direct reading instruction), however students will be reading a passage aloud. Please note their will be seasonal writing options for learners, for example Holidays. Please see writing topics below. ** Please note, class may go over the scheduled time depending on learners' needs. Each student is unique. If learners need extra time outside of class, learners can submit their piece of writing for feedback. This class is a great way for your learner to practice essential reading and writing skills. Each week learners will take turns reading aloud a writing prompt of opinion, informational, narrative or poetry writing. These prompt examples will help learners with their writing. Then students will practice writing a piece of their own base on the week's form of writing. Come write in a positive and encouraging environment! * Handouts will be posted early Monday mornings. Please print out any resources your learner may need. * Please note: for poetry writing, students will complete two poems. Class Outline: Reading Part: * The reading part of the lesson introduces learners to a specific type of writing. * Writing prompt will be screenshared. * Learners will take turns reading aloud. Please see list of what our writing focus will be for each class. Writing Part: * Learners will share their ideas on what they are going to write about. * Learners will complete a graphic organizer to organizer their thoughts for their writing. Learners can copy down any ideas I have modelled on my screen onto their graphic organizer. I will model how to use a graphic organizer. Graphic organizers are provided or learners can bring a piece of paper to class to make their own. * I will model an example of the form of writing. (see weekly writing style/topics below) Students are encouraged to help me with the writing part. * Learners will then do their own piece of writing using their graphic organizer for support and my writing model. * Please note this is not a spelling class. Learners are encourage to spell words used in their graphic organizer correctly and are encourage to sound out words to the best of their ability. * Learners will have several opportunities to have support from me. Learners will work on editing: capitals, periods, missing words, etc. * Learners will be encouraged to add descriptive words to their writing. A list will be screenshared. * Learners will use a check list to make sure they have included all details for the writing style/topic of the week. * Sharing circle: Learners will share their writing with the class. Hello, my name is Ms. Colleen. I am a certified licensed elementary school teacher. I have been a classroom teacher for over 12 years in Nova Scotia, Canada. Throughout my teaching career, I have taught students from primary to grade 8 and look forward to bring my teaching knowledge to the online classroom. I also have experience teaching ESL lessons on an online setting.
Teaching young children is my passion! I choose engaging and meaningful activities to help support life long learning. I strive to produce a positive and encouraging class environment where learners will want to participate, helping to support learners in achieving their academic goals.
I have a Bachelor of Education Degree and a Child and Youth Degree both from Mount Saint Vincent University. I also hold a Child and Youth Worker Diploma and an Early Childhood Education Diploma both from the Institute For Human Services Education. I also have received my Outschool ACE certification.
I have been a volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters, being a big sister to a grade 5 child. I have been a swimming instructor teaching children from the infant age to adults. In my spare time, I enjoy playing the piano, reading, hiking and having fun with my small dog Belle.
