In this grade 4 level ongoing course learners can join in at any time. This class will allow learners to practice grade 4 concepts from the math curriculum. Learners can take all the classes or drop in to practice certain math concepts. Please read the class description to see if this class is a good fit for your learner.  Materials will be posted Monday mornings. Please have materials ready before the start of class.  Let’s have fun working on Math together.

**Please note: class may run over 45 minutes depending on learners need.

Each lesson will have the same format: 
*  Warm up: we will do a math warm up to help turn on our minds to get ready for the lesson. Math questions will be displayed on a google slide. Students can record their thinking on a worksheet. Students are encouraged to share their thinking with the class. Our warm ups are focused on grade 4 level subtraction, addition, multiplication, division and/or fraction concepts. Warm up helps students get their minds ready to learn and reinforce several math concepts. 
*  Lesson: I will teach a lesson to the class. We will work together using manipulatives and powerpoint presentations. Students will “Watch Me First”, explaining a concept and work through a problem. Then through guided practice, students will work through the material with me. Students will be provided with a worksheet to record their thinking as we engage in the lesson. I will be using digital manipulatives.
*  Independent work: Students will work on assigned work with support from me. Students will be provided with a worksheet. We will go over the work together.  Students are encouraged to share their thinking with the class.
*  Reflection: Students will reflect on their thinking and how they feel about the math topic.
*  Game or activity to support math concept
*  Extension: Students will be provided with an extension activity that he or she can complete on their own time.  Extension activities are a support for learning outside of class time.  These activities are not evaluated by me.

Homework:
Each student is unique and may require extra time outside of class to complete work.

Week of October 26th - Addition And Place Value Tables

Learning Goals:

Objective: Learners will practice using place value to investigate adding multi-digit whole numbers. For example: adding numbers 54,836 + 23,987 using a place value chart and regrouping when needed.
Manipulatives: Place value chart, place value discs. 

Week of October 31st - Addition And Algorithm

Connecting place value with addition 
Investigate how algorithms can be applied to solving large addition questions

Objective: Learners will practice using place value to investigate adding multi-digit whole numbers using an algorithm. For example: determining the sum of 42,976 + 7,453 by lining up the digits based on place value. Explaining mistakes in addition problems - incorrectly lining up digits.
Manipulatives: Place value chart, place value discs.


Week of November  7th - Multi - Step Problems

Connecting place value with addition 
Practice answering multi step addition word problems

Objective: Learners will practice answering multi-step word problems using addition. For example: Using prior knowledge, decide on a strategy, answer the problem, re-check the answer to solve multiple digit word problems.

Week of November 14th - Subtraction And Place Value Tables

Connecting place value with subtraction 

Objective: Learners will practice using place value to investigate subtracting multi-digit whole numbers. For example: subtracting numbers 32,984 - 8,1536 using a place value chart regrouping when needed.

Week of November 21st -  Subtraction And Algorithm

Week of November 28th - Subtraction Regrouping With Zeros

Investigate how algorithms can be applied to solving large subtraction questions

Objective: Learners will practice using place value to regroup subtraction questions when numbers contain zeros. For example: use place value tables to subtract the numbers 18, 085 - 5,467 or 30, 015 - 10,872.

Week of December 5th  - Multiplication Patterns (Up to 4 digit numbers)

Week of January 30th -Division -  Interpret Remainders (Up to 4 digit numbers)

Week of February 6th  - Dividing by multiples of of 10, 100 & 1,000

Week of February 13th - Division and Partial Quotients

Investigate various division strategies to answer division questions up to 4 digit numbers

Objective: Learners will investigate using partial quotients to help divide two numbers with no remainder. For example: solving the equation 936 / 2 by breaking it into easier parts - subtracting 800 from 936.

Week of February 20th -  Factors

Find factor pairs for whole numbers 


Objective: Learners will practice finding factors of a specific 
number using multiplication. For example: finding the factors of 10 using tiles or drawing a picture.

Objective: Learners will investigate divisibility rules to help find factors of 2 digit numbers.  For example: determining the factors of 70.

Objective: Learners will practice finding the multiples of a certain number with multiplication. For example: finding the multiples of 9.

Week of March 20th - Patterns

Investigate number and shape pattern rules


Objective: Learners will practice creating patterns with a specific rule. For example: the rule is subtract 4, the starting number is 24, students will complete the next 5 numbers.

Practice multiplication, division, addition and subtraction facts

Objective: Learners will practice determining a number pattern’s rule. For example: students will be given a list of numbers and students will be asked to determine the rule of the given pattern.

Practice decomposing fractions and mixed numbers
Solving word problems

Objective: Learners will practice decomposing fractions with fraction bars. For example: how many ⅛ sections make up a given shade fraction.
Activity: My name in fractions.  Please have something to colour with on hand.

Week of May 1st - Adding Fractions

Objective: Learners will practice adding two fractions with the same denominators. For example: 6/15 + 4/15 using fraction strips to show thinking.

Week of May 15th - Multiplying Fractions

Learning Goals:

Practice multiplying whole numbers and fractions

Objective: Learners will practice putting fractions into equal groups and practice making multiplication sentences.
For Example: writing a multiplication sentence for a given fraction, using a fraction strip to break 3/6 into equal groups and writing the multiplication sentence.

Week of May 22nd -  Decimal Fractions

Goals:
Turn taking
Practice solving decimals and decimal fractions questions
Practice adding decimal fractions questions

Objective: Learners will practice making equivalent decimals  fractions with a divisor (demonator) of 10 and 100 using visuals.
For example: shape in a visual to represent the fraction 2/10 and shade is a visual to represent the equivalent decimal. Fill in the missing number of an equivalent equation - 1/10 = ?/100.


Week of May 29th - Geometry - Angles and Lines

Learning Goals:
Turn taking
Understand geometric terms
Practice using drawings to represent students’ thinking of math problems
Practice identifying points, lines, line segments, and rays.

Objective: Learners will learn about and how to identify points, lines, line segments, and rays.
For example: learners will practice naming a line segment in a given figure.
Manipulatives: Play dough - students can use play dough to re-create a given figure. 

Week of June 5th  - Angles

Learning Goals:
Turn taking
Understand geometric terms
Practice using drawings to represent students’ thinking of math problems


Objective: Learners will practice naming and identifying acute, right, and obtuse angles.
For example: name an obtuse angle from a given figure.
Manipulatives: play dough, craft sticks or paper angle manipulatives

Week of June 12th - Lines

Understand geometric terms
Practice using drawings to represent students’ thinking of math problems
Practice identifying points, lines, line segments

Objective: Learners will practice identifying different types of lines - parallel, intersecting, and perpendicular.
For example: learners will name different types of lines from a given figure.

Hello, my name is Ms. Colleen.  I am a certified licensed elementary school teacher.  I have been a classroom teacher for over 12 years in Nova Scotia, Canada. Throughout my teaching career, I have taught students from primary to grade 8 and look forward to bring my teaching knowledge to the online classroom.  I also have experience teaching ESL lessons on an online setting. 

Teaching young children is my passion! I choose engaging and meaningful activities to help support life long learning.  I strive to produce a positive and encouraging class environment where learners will want to participate, helping to support learners in achieving their academic goals. 

I have a Bachelor of Education Degree and a Child and Youth Degree both from Mount Saint Vincent University.  I also hold a Child and Youth Worker Diploma and an Early Childhood Education Diploma both from the Institute For Human Services Education. I also have received my Outschool ACE certification.

I have been a volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters, being a big sister to a grade 5 child. I have been a swimming instructor teaching children from the infant age to adults. In my spare time, I enjoy playing the piano, reading, hiking and having fun with my small dog Belle.
