Word Problems And Patterns
This unit’s focus is on word problems and patterns. Students will practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, division skills using word problems, solving one and two step word problems without numbers by using letters and finding patterns in 100s charts, addition and multiplication tables. Lessons will be displayed using powerpoint or google slides. Students are encouraged to use manipulatives throughout the unit. I will include a paper copy of manipulatives. Please take a look at the following description below to see if this class is a good fit for your learner. Students should have an understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division (0-12).

Each lesson will have the same format:
* Warm up: we will do a math warm up to help turn on our minds to get ready for the lesson. A math question(s) will be displayed on a google slide. Students can record their thinking on a worksheet. Students are encouraged to share their thinking with the class.
* Lesson: I will teach a lesson to the class. We will work together using anchor charts, manipulatives and powerpoint presentations. Students will “Watch Me First”, explaining a concept and work through a problem. Then through guided practice students will work through the material with me. Students will be provided with a worksheet to record their thinking as we engage in the lesson. I will be using digital manipulatives.
* Independent work: Students will work on assigned work with support from me. Students will be provided with a worksheet. We will go over the work together. Students are encouraged to share their thinking with the class.
* Reflection: Students will reflect on their thinking and how they feel about the math topic.
* Game to support addition, subtraction and/or multiplication
* Extension: Students will be provided with an extension activity that he or she can complete on their own time. Extension activities are a support for learning outside of class time. These activities are not evaluated by me.

Lesson 1 - Without Numbers Problems
Objective - Students investigate word problems with and without numbers. For example: Students will be given a numberless word problem. As we read the word problem students will be asking his or her self - What do I know? What am I trying to find out? What steps do I need to do to solve the problem? Then students will be given the same word problem with numbers to solve.
Manipulatives: Base 10 blocks, counters or extra paper to draw pictures on.
Game: Addition Knockout (Please have 2 dice)

Lesson 2 - Word Problems Using Letters
Objective: Students will investigate word problems with letters to represent numbers. For example: Students will be given a word problem with a missing number. The word problems could have math sentences like - 10 x 6 = B, 10 + B =6, 10 - 6 = B.
Manipulatives: Base 10 blocks, counters, highlighter
Game: Subtraction Knockout ( Please have 2 dice)

Lesson 3 - One Step Word Problems Using Addition and Subtraction
Objective: Students will investigate addition and subtraction word problems using bar models. For example: Jack wants to buy a video game system for $399. He has a $50 off coupon. How much will the video game system cost? What do I know? What am I trying to find out? What steps do I need to do to solve the problem?
Manipulatives: Base 10 blocks, counters, highlighter
Game: Dice Dual - Student Vs. Teacher (Please have 3 dice)

Lesson 4 - One Step Word Problems Using Multiplication and Division
Objective: Students will investigate multiplication and division word problems with bar models. For example: Kate has 32 candies. She equally shares the candy with her 4 friends. How many candies will each friend get?
Manipulatives: Base 10 blocks, counters, highlighter
Game: Multiplication Memory

Lesson 5 - Two Step Word Problems - Part 1
Objective: Students will investigate two step addition and subtraction word problems. For example: There are 36 candies in the container. Some of the candies are pink, some are green. There are 17 green candies. How many pink candies are there in the container?
Manipulatives: Base 10 blocks, counters, highlighter
Game: Roll and Race (Please have 1 Dice)

Lesson 6 - Two Step Word Problems - Part 2
Objective: Students will investigate two step addition and subtraction word problems. For example: Students will ask his or her self - What do I know about the problem? My steps to solve the problem? Create a visual to solve the problem and check my answer.
Manipulatives: Base 10 blocks, counters, highlighter
Game: Subtraction BINGO

Lesson 7 - Patterns In Addition Table
Objective: Students will investigate patterns in an addition table. For example: Shading certain sums in an addition table and describing the pattern. Noticing patterns in even and odd numbers.
Manipulatives: Base 10 blocks, counters, highlighter
Game: Addition BINGO

Lesson 8 - Patterns In Multiplication Table
Objective: Students will investigate patterns in a multiplication table. For example: Shading in certain products in the multiplication table and describing the pattern. Noticing patterns in even and odd numbers.
Manipulatives: Base 10 blocks, counters, highlighter
Game: Multiplication BINGO

Lesson 9 - Number Patterns
Objective: Students investigate number patterns. For example: The first number is 16, the rule is add 4. Students will determine the next numbers in the pattern.
Game: Student Vs Teacher Word Problem Game
