Welcome to Part 2 of the Sound Design course! Now that you have learned the basics and lingo related to sound design, we can apply this knowledge in a more practical sense!

This course will teach students how to actually do the sound design for a scene. Throughout the course, they will complete a final assignment in which they build a soundscape for a 10 second scene. It will be broken down into tasks that they will complete for homework each week.

Week 1: Review and Group Practice
To start of the course, we will review some of the basics learned in Part 1 (DFME), as well as watch some scenes in which we identify different sound design basics we have learned. We will also build the sound design for a short scene together as a class.

Homework: Pick a 10 second scene for your assignment (or use the one I suggest) and write down the types of sounds you hear in the scene.

Week 2: File set up and sourcing sounds
In this class, students will learn how to import video and sound files as well as how to set up the timeline in the editing software. Different places for sourcing sound will also be taught and explored, along with sound recording techniques. Together as a class, we will source the sounds for a given scene. We will end the class by building the soundscape for another sample scene.

Homework: Write down where you will source each sound from for your chosen scene. Record your sounds and download/import them into the editing software.

Week 3: Putting it on the timeline
Students will be shown how to place the sourced sounds onto the timeline in another example of building the sound design for a scene.
The use of audio effects will also be taught and explored.

Homework: Place the sounds onto the timeline and add audio effects where needed.

Week 4: Let's share!
The final class will be a showcase of everyone's scenes. We will have a positive discussion on the strengths of each assignment as well as what can be improved on. We will end the course with a final session of building a scene's soundscape as a class.

I strive to provide a class environment that is fun, engaging, and a positive space! I hope to see you there! :)

Headphones are highly recommended for this class. Students will also need access to an Apple computer or an iPad (to use iMovie, which is free on both). A phone (preferably iPhone) to record sounds is also required (unless they have an iPad, which can be used to record sounds as well). Please send me a message if you have any questions

Students are required to take "The Wonderful World of Sound Design: Part One" in order to take this course.

***If you don’t see a suitable time, feel free to use the auto-scheduler (click “Show Alternative Times”) or message me to make a section that suits your schedule.***

Hi there! Teacher Tirath here! Nice to (virtually) meet you! :)

I am so excited to be on Outschool to teach creative courses! I have 4+ years of teaching both English and math to students of all ages, and have been teaching English online for almost three years. I also have experience leading arts camps as well as working with children on film sets. I am excited about this opportunity to be able to continue to open my classroom to students from all over the world!

In terms of my qualifications, I have a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Film Production. My specializations were screenwriting, directing, editing and sound. I have made a few short films of my own which have been shown at film festivals, and I also have done lots of editing work in the past few years. Needless to say, creativity is my passion!

I also have a Bachelors of Science, and love teaching classes that blend both science and the arts!

My teaching style is friendly, patient, and full of positivity. I believe that learning should be enjoyable, so I like to keep my classes engaging and full of fun! Also a positive learning environment is a must in my book!

When I’m not teaching or doing film work, I like to read books, draw, listen to music, and spend some time in nature, whether that be hiking, walking, or biking! I am a total tree hugger!

Hope to see you in my classroom! :)
