Boost their reading comprehension skills for Grade 5 and beyond. We master identifying main ideas, authors, purpose and themes, analyzing text structure and point of view, and recognizing literary devices. Plus dive into literary devices, make inferences, interpret story and visual elements, and engage with fun texts. ✨We are proud to be the first and only accredited Montessori school on the Outschool platform, featuring certified teachers who bring their expertise from our brick-and-mortar school located in Ontario, Canada.✨ This class will empower students with essential tools to comprehend, analyze, and interpret a wide range of texts effectively. By focusing on key areas such as main idea, text structure, literary devices, inference, story elements, and informational texts, students will develop strong reading comprehension skills that are crucial for academic success and lifelong learning. Topics covered include: 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗮, 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗲 Students will learn to identify the central message or main idea of a text, discern the author's purpose for writing (inform, persuade, entertain, etc.), and understand the underlying theme or moral of the story. 𝗧𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗩𝗶𝗲𝘄 They will analyze different text structures such as chronological, cause and effect, problem-solution, and compare-contrast. They will also explore various points of view used in literature, including first-person and third-person perspectives. 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 Grade 5 students will study literary devices such as simile, metaphor, symbolism, imagery, foreshadowing, and irony. They will learn how these devices enhance meaning, create imagery, and contribute to the overall impact of literary works. 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: They will develop inference skills by drawing conclusions, making predictions, and interpreting implied meanings based on evidence and context clues within the text. 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 Students will analyze story elements such as plot, setting, characterization, and conflict. They will also interpret visual elements like illustrations, photographs, charts, and graphs that accompany texts to deepen their understanding. 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗧𝗲𝘅𝘁𝘀 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝟭 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟮 They will engage with literary texts at varying complexity levels, analyzing themes, character development, plot structure, and authorial techniques in novels, short stories, poetry, and drama. 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗲𝘅𝘁𝘀 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝟭 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟮 Grade 5 students will navigate informational texts ranging from basic to more complex levels. They will extract and synthesize information from articles, biographies, historical texts, scientific reports, and other non-fiction genres, while understanding text features and structures. 𝘾𝙇𝘼𝙎𝙎 𝙎𝙏𝙍𝙐𝘾𝙏𝙐𝙍𝙀 The class is structured to include a combination of direct instruction, guided practice, and independent reading activities. Each session will typically begin with a brief review or introduction to the day's topic. This will be followed by interactive discussions, guided reading exercises, small group activities, and individual reading tasks. My teaching methods will include a blend of teacher-led instruction, collaborative learning, and student-centered activities. I will use various instructional strategies such as think-alouds, modeling, questioning techniques, graphic organizers, and hands-on activities to engage students and deepen their understanding of the topics. My teaching style will be supportive and inclusive. I will encourage active participation, critical thinking, and reflection among students. I aim to foster a positive learning environment where students feel comfortable expressing their thoughts, asking questions, and exploring different interpretations of texts. Students will have many opportunities to interact with me through class discussions, group activities, and feedback sessions. I will encourage open communication and provide personalized guidance to support students in mastering reading strategies and skills.

Students will delve into identifying the main idea of a passage or text, discerning the author's purpose in writing, and grasping the overarching theme or message conveyed. They will learn to differentiate between these elements to deepen their understanding and critical analysis of texts.
