C O U R S E   B R E A K D O W N

Lesson 1: 💰Identifying and Counting Dollars and Coins💰

Students will be introduced to pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, the $1.00 bill, the $5.00 bill, the $10.00 bill and the $20.00 bill 

Students will count by...
- 1's to count pennies and $1.00 bills
- 5's to count nickels and $5.00 bills
- 10's to count dimes and $10.00 bills
- 20's to count $20.00 bills
- 25's to count quarters



Lesson 2: 💰Adding Prices Together to Find Totals💰

Students will practice counting dollars and coins using 25's, 10's, 5's, and 1's.

Students will use addition to calculate coin and dollar totals.



Lesson 3: 💰Adding Prices Together Sticking to a Budget💰

Students will be introduced to what a budget is.

Students will be given a budget of how much they can spend and will choose 2 out of 3 items that they can purchase that will not go over their budget.

Students will use addition to determine which items they can purchase without going over their budget.

 

Lesson 4: 💰Making Change💰

Students will use subtraction or **counting on to make change.



Lesson 5: 💰Applying All 4 Skills in a Shopping Experience💰

Students will...
-Determine how much money they have in their "bank account" by counting the bills and coins in the account
-Determine what their budget will be for the store based off of the amount in their bank account
-Use addition to keep track of how much they are spending at the store as they select the items they'd like to buy
-Use subtraction or **counting on to determine how much change they will get back after they pay for their items



**“Counting on” means to start with the item’s price, then count up to the amount paid with to find the difference. For example, if the price of the item is $2.35, and the purchase is being made with $5.00, we will count on from $2.35 to $3.00 to find the difference of 65 cents, and then from $3.00 to $5.00 to find the difference of $2.00 to see the change needed would be $2.65.
