Join this model United Nations experience and become a country delegate for a session of intensive debates, negotiations and resolutions. Learners will gain a deep understanding of the UN, it’s purposes and principles, it’s workings and it’s challenges. The first two classes will engage learners in discussions as we learn the details of how the UN Security Council operates. Then, each learner will be assigned to represent a country within the Security Council during important negotiations to solve the problems of aggression between two nations as the UNSC delegates struggle to find peaceful means of dispute resolution. A fictitious conflict between two fictitious countries will be the scenario in which the delegates find themselves, as they learn to argue, negotiate, critically think, compromise and ultimately to come together to find a peaceful resolution. Learners need no background knowledge of the UN, as the first classes will work to provide the necessary background knowledge. Homework may be assigned to work in for the following day, such as preparing their argument for the Security Council meeting or researching previous similar situations to come before the Security Council. The ultimate goal of the course is that the learners have so much fun that they can’t believe how much they learned during their time at Model UN.
Metas de aprendizaje
Learners will come away from this class with a greater understanding of the United Nations, it’s structure and organization. They will develop diplomacy and communication skills. They will gain an understanding of the global system set up to ensure peace and security across the globe and understand the political challenges of that mission. Finally, learners will employ their critical thinking skills as they work to negotiate, debate and compromise to find a peaceful resolution to a complicated problem.

Orientación para padres
The scenario at hand will have to do with a war waging between two nations...but there will be no visual or audio representation of conflict, only the knowledge that the UNSC must find peace for two war torn nations.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I have worked for the United Nations previously for over a decade and continue to consult with them as a human rights lawyer. I am three years into my PhD focusing on the United Nations Security Council and have expert knowledge in the area. I homeschool my children and have taught these big, global issues in co-ops and on Outschool for several years now, gaining the ability to translate big global concepts into bite sized manageable learning experiences.
