Students will learn about the courtroom and how to advocate for their side. Week one: Students will get an overview of the court process and discuss project one - arguing a pre-trial motion. Week two: Students will argue a pretrial motion developed as homework; students will learn about opening statements. We will discuss project 2, drafting an opening argument. Students will learn about closing arguments. We will discuss how these two things differ. Week three: Students will present opening arguments. Students will learn about objections and direct examination. We will discuss project 3 - closing arguments. Week four: Students will present closing arguments. Students will learn about cross examination and witness interviews. We will discuss Project 4 which is Direct examination & Cross of witnesses. Week five: Students will interview witnesses for final trial and discuss the overview of court. Prosecutors will charge the defendant with a crime, Defense will advocate for their client in interviews. Week six: Trial. Students will work either solo or in teams (depends on number of students and student wishes) and conduct a complete trial.
