In this exciting and unique one-time class, learners will journey through some of the most surprising and incredible stories from world history while building valuable world history knowledge and reading skills along the way.

For example, they will read about brave Viking adventurers who balanced fierce battles with unexpected daily routines. They'll uncover the legendary Great Wall of China and find out why it sparked one of the biggest myths in history. Learners will meet Cleopatra, the brilliant queen of Egypt, and be surprised by her choice of an exotic pet that historians still talk about today. They will also dive into the bustling world of ancient Rome, where public toilets were social hubs! They’ll laugh at the unexpected moment when Napoleon, one of history’s greatest military leaders, faced a comical and chaotic challenge after a grand victory. 

The class will feature a series of short passages about a key historical event or figure – but with a twist! There’s always a quirky or unexpected fact that makes history come to life. After reading each passage, we’ll dive into a fun and lively discussion where I’ll help clarify any tricky information and explain unfamiliar vocabulary. To develop critical thinking skills, I will explain why some events are the subject of popular myths and the evidence that debunks the myths. Learners will be encouraged to share their thoughts and ask questions to deepen their understanding.

To sharpen their reading comprehension skills, students will also practice answering comprehension questions tailored to different age groups (7-9 and 10-12), but everyone is welcome to try both levels! It’s a great way to boost reading confidence while discovering the strange and fascinating side of history.
