This five-week course will cover necessary background information on the nature of science for students to successfully enter and complete middle school science courses! As a licensed teacher, I believe that students learn science best through exploration, group work, and hands-on activities. Real-world problems, situations, and problem-based learning will drive student inquiry throughout this course. Students will have multiple opportunities to interact with other students and myself throughout this course in order to get the most out of their online experience. Students will meet for a live meeting once a week for instruction, demonstrations, group work, and experiments. The rest of the week will provide students the opportunity to complete projects, interact with other classmates through platforms such as Outschool discussions, and complete online simulations. The course schedule will include the following: Week 1: Understanding the Nature of Science -Understand what is science, what is a scientist, what are scientific ideas? Week 2: Scientific Inquiry and Practices -Identify the steps of the scientific method and compare the method to scientific inquiry. -Competently use the scientific method and inquiry to design controlled experiments that achieve reliable and accurate data. Week 3: Lab Practices, Safety, and Skills -Identify equipment that is important to lab safety. -Analyze and interpret warning signs and symbols that help keep students safe during investigations. -Discuss safe practices and behaviors in a laboratory. -Problem-solve how to deal with accidents during a laboratory investigation. Week 4: Scrutinizing Science-Reliable Practices -Scrutinize, analyze, and make investigations for assumptions and biases that influence the way an investigation is carried out or how results are interpreted. -Create valid science investigations. Week 5: Engineering Design Practices -Apply the engineering design process to solve a problem. -Evaluate the importance of adhering to the engineering design process when solving a problem.

Welcome to Seed and Stem Learning Center by Bailey Nelson and Kenneth Kirk!
As a prior public school teacher, Bailey experienced the positive difference that scientific inquiry can have on students. Kenneth, who received his Bachelor's of Business Degree in Economics, found a passion in educating young students the improtance of financial literacy and business education. Bailey and Ken used this inspiration to create a program that allows students to connect across the globe through quality and inclusive education.
Although students take classes virtually, they will be inspired through hands-on and real-world applications and problems. Through our engaging courses, students will develop (or enhance) their love of all subjects by connecting to real-life applications and problems.
Teachers and tutors are all vetted through a rigorous process that focuses on scientific inquiry, problem-based learning, and hands-on pedagogy. Teachers come from a variety of backgrounds including education, economics, engineering, and computer science.
Course Policies:
*Students must provide a camera check at the beginning of class to ensure safety for all learners unless verified by Outschool.
*Ongoing classes are charged on a weekly basis. Prorated refunds based on days attended during the week will not be provided. All class recordings and materials are provided if your learner misses class.
*The Outschool classroom is for learner communication. If you would like to contact the teacher of your learner, please use the teacher communication tab.
