🌟 Instruction follows the Phono-Graphix method for teaching reading and spelling which was developed with students with Dyslexia in mind. The Phono-Graphix method is very similar to Orton-Gillingham and is based on the Science of Reading.

📝 Students will be assigned a weekly spelling list. A list of 30 words and 5 "bonus words" will be provided. Lessons include an explanation of the spelling patterns in the words and spelling rules as they apply. We also discuss usage of the spelling words and age-appropriate definitions.

🤓 Research shows that repetitive practice with new skills helps us learn information faster and retain it longer. Practice sessions should be spread out over a week or more to be most effective. That's why this class has three meetings over the course of a week to ensure that the words are not only learned but retained long-term.

🌟 This class meets on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays each week.

📝 Monday lesson: Introduction of the word list. I will model how students should sort their list to best learn the spellings. Word usage and age-appropriate definitions will be discussed.

📝 Wednesday lesson: "Spelling for the Visual Learner." In this lesson, I will model how to add color and shapes to the spelling words to identify where all the sounds and syllables are in each word and how each sound is spelled. (Colored pencils or fine-tipped markers are highly recommended for this lesson!). This session also addresses study skills so students learn how to study effectively for their spelling tests. Many of these skills carry over to other academic classes as well.

📝 Friday lesson: We review words that students often struggle with on the list and tips are shared as to how to remember them for the test and beyond. After a refresher on frequently missed spelling words from the list, a spelling test is given. Students are expected to write the spelling words as they are called. I use the spelling words in sentences to clarify ambiguity concerning homophones. Students will write the spelling words and follow along with me to check their work for accuracy. Students are encouraged to share their test with the teacher through a private message.

✍🏻 Teacher-created worksheets will be available for additional weekly practice. A minimum of two homework submissions per week are recommended. Each week a new list will be assigned.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will learn proper spelling of fifth-eighth grade level words and their usage in the English language. Special focus on phonemic awareness, frequently misspelled words, homophones, and words that just don't fit the "rules".

I am a state certified Elementary Teacher who has become aware of the absence of structured spelling instruction in the schools today. In my private reading tutoring practice, I have watched my students become strong and independent spellers by using my approach.
