Taught by a certified Health Education Specialist, this ongoing course is designed to give learners a basic understanding of the human body through weekly topics and discussions. Due to the fact that this is an ongoing course, students can join in at any time for topics they are interested in. The course schedule will include the following: Week 1-Body Systems. Students will learn the 3 major body systems (skeletal, muscular, and integumentary system) and what each system does. Students will be able to identify at least 20 bones and will learn a fun song to help memorize them. Week 2- Body Systems. Students will learn about the digestive, nervous, and excretory systems and how they help the body. Students will be able to identify several major organs. Week 3-Nutrition. Students will learn how the body breaks down food into energy and the main food groups. They will also be able to identify how each type of food benefits the body and what a balanced plate looks like. Week 4-Nutrition labels. Students will learn how to read a nutrition label, how to count calories, and how to select healthy food choices. Week 5- Nutrition in action. Students will be able to create a healthy breakfast, snack, and popsicle. Week 6-Exercise. Students will learn what exercise is and how to burn calories. They will also learn how to take their own pulse, healthy sleep habits, and the importance of hydration. Week 7-Exercise in Action. Students will be able to participate in a live workout class. They will learn the importance of stretching, safe exercise, and cool-down exercises. Week 8- Safety. Students will learn injury prevention for several different scenarios including water safety, fire safety, heat stroke, electrocution, choking prevention, and sports safety. They will learn what basic first aid is and how to create their own first aid kit. Each unit will include activities that help to reinforce the topics being discussed. For example, during the nutrition unit, the learners will have the opportunity to participate in a basic cooking class. During the physical activity unit, learners will get the opportunity to participate in an exercise class. In the remaining units, some of the activities will include worksheets, discussions, games, and matching activities. Students will work together to complete small projects to present to the class. Research and collaboration will be required for these activities. This will be done during class time and will not require outside work or multiple weeks to complete.

For the nutrition units, students will use basic cooking utensils and a stove. Parent supervision during this time is required.
For the physical activity units, students will need an open space, proper footwear, a water bottle, and parent supervision.
