This is the second semester class that follows Middle School Earth Science-Semester 1. In this class, students will continue studying the Earth, the rocks, the weather, it's oceans and stars....this is Earth Science! In this 15-week class for the fall semester, students will meet once a week and will also be expected to complete homework at home. This class will focus on five aspects of Earth Science including geology, astronomy, oceanography, meteorology, and environmental science. Simple...
15 lessons//15 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1Exploring the Earth's surfaceLast semester, we learned about the many types of ways Earth releases energy (volcanoes, earthquakes). This week we discover the topography of the land. -Homework this week includes a fruit mapping demonstration.Week 2Lesson 2Mapping Earth's topographyThis week, we look at topographic maps including scale, symbols, and contour lines. -Homework this week includes making a map in a pan.Week 3Lesson 3The Earth's InteriorStudents will examine what lies below our Earth's crust and journey through the layers of our world. -Homework this week will be a written narrative of an imaginary journey to the center of the Earth.Week 4Lesson 4Sea-floor spreadingStudents will learn what sea-floor spreading is and how it contributes to continental drift. -Homework this week includes making an artistic sea-floor spreading model.Week 5Lesson 5Seismic wavesUtilizing previously learned information about earthquakes, we take this week to delve into the types of seismic waves that earthquakes emit. -Homework this week will include designing a simple seismograph.Week 6Lesson 6Viscosity and volcanic eruptionsThis week, students will learn about viscosity and how it's properties relate to magma and lava. -Homework this week will include an at-home viscosity experiment.Week 7Lesson 7WeatheringThis week, students will learn about mechanical and chemical weathering and how it shapes Earth's features. -Homework this week includes an at-home experiment on limestone weathering .Week 8Lesson 8Water ErosionBuilding on last week's weathering, this week we take a look at water erosion and they types of land it forms. -Homework this week includes a sugar-cube water erosion experiment.Week 9Lesson 9Water on EarthWe've heard of the water cycle but this week we take a deeper look into where our water goes on Earth and how humans utilize it. -Homework this week includes an at-home soil testing experiment.Week 10Lesson 10Currents and ClimateStudents will learn about different types of oceanic currents and how they affect our weather. -Homework this week will include an experiment that models ocean currents in a pan.Week 11Lesson 11Energy in the AtmosphereThis week students will explore energy from the sun and how it affects our atmosphere and surface weather. -Homework this week includes an experiment about heat at the Earth's surface.Week 12Lesson 12Types of clouds and precipitationStudents will delve into the cloud types and the types of precipitation they produce. -Homework this week includes an at home experiment of how fog forms.Week 13Lesson 13The MoonThis week students explore the moon; it's phases and how it affects us on Earth. -Homework this week an at home experiment of why craters look different from one another.Week 14Lesson 14The SunDid you know the sun has layers? Just as we have been learning about the features of the Earth, this week we learn about features of the Sun.Week 15Lesson 15Semester ReviewUsing a fun gameshow and class discussion, students will review the last 14 weeks of class. Teacher feedback is sent to parents at the conclusion of the class.
- Students will be able to explore through lecture, experiments, demonstrations, homework, and discussion the five fields of Earth Science....astronomy, geology, environmental science, meteorology, and oceanography.
I was a middle school science teacher for 10 years. I have also homeschooled and graduated my daughter for 10 years. As a public school teacher, I taught Earth Science, Chemistry, Physical Science, Zoology, Biology, and more to hundreds of students. Science is a passion of mine and I find performing experiments both fascinating and illuminating when learning new scientific facts! In this class, students will have ample opportunity to perform their own experiments to reiterate the information they learn in class. I have my Bachelor's degree in Biology/Pre-Med and a Master's in Healthcare Administration.

Frecuencia: incluidoDetalles: A letter grade will be given for each homework assignment turned in. Grades and homework are not mandatory but will be given upon request or when work is turned in. A semester grade can be requested by parent/guardian.
Activities are not mandatory and can be adapted to fit the needs of each individual learner. Notes and homework can be digitally manipulated if student prefers, graded or not, no reading out loud in class.

Los estudiantes no necesitarán utilizar ninguna aplicación o sitio web más allá de las herramientas estándar de Outschool.
All experiments utilize household materials. Some experiments may be messy. Please read homework beforehand to determine if experiments need to be performed outside to save the house from a mess :-)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
