Studying the Earth, the rocks, the weather, it's oceans and stars....this is Earth Science! In this 15-week class for the fall semester, students will meet once a week and will also be expected to complete homework at home. This class will focus on five aspects of Earth Science including geology, astronomy, oceanography, meteorology, and environmental science. Simple equations as well as multiplication and division are used during some lessons. Students are allowed to use calculators if...
15 lessons//15 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1What is Earth Science?Beginning with minerals, students will learn their properties, how they are formed, and use a simple equation to determine the density of mineral. -Homework this week includes an evaporation lab at home.Week 2Lesson 2Rocks and the Rock CycleWe will classify the three types of rocks and learn their properties along with viewing examples of each. Students will also be introduced to the rock cycle. -Homework this week includes an at-home rock scavenger hunt.Week 3Lesson 3Plate TectonicsStudents will journey through each layer of the Earth and learn the difference between convection and conduction. Seafloor spreading and continental drift will be modeled. -Homework this week includes modeling convection currents at home.Week 4Lesson 4Earthquakes and Fault LinesStudents will learn about the different kinds of fault lines as well as the different patterns of seismic waves. We will use common household objects to demonstrate this during class. -Homework this week includes an at-home experiment with Jell-O to see seismic waves.Week 5Lesson 5VolcanoesUtilizing previously learned information about plate tectonics and seafloor spreading, students will spend this week learning about types of volcanoes. -Homework this week will include a mapping worksheet of world volcanoes.Week 6Lesson 6Erosion, Deposition, and WaterThis week, students will learn about erosion, deposition, and how water changes the surface of the Earth. Students will use sugar cubes to simulate groundwater erosion and cave formation during class. -Homework this week will include an at-home experiment to simulate how glaciers change the land.Week 7Lesson 7Glaciers and liquid waterhis week, students will learn how glaciers change the landscape and how waves in the oceans are formed. -Homework this week includes an at-home experiment on how moving air affects sediment.Week 8Lesson 8Energy ResourcesThis week is all about different forms of energy resources, fossil fuels, solar, hydroelectric, wind, nuclear, and geothermal. -Homework this week includes building a solar cooker at home.Week 9Lesson 9All About OceansThis week, students discover characteristics of waves, how tides work, and ocean currents. -Homework this week includes an at-home density experiment.Week 10Lesson 10The AtmosphereStudents will learn about the composition of Earth's atmosphere and utilize our math skills to determine density. -Homework this week will include a review worksheet.Week 11Lesson 11WeatherThis week students will explore all types of weather phenomenon; storms, hail, freezing rain, snow, hurricanes, and tornadoes. A demo about pressure using a potato and a plastic straw will be utilized during class. -Homework this week includes an at-home experiment about air pressure.Week 12Lesson 12World ClimatesWhat causes the weather to be different around the world? This week, students will utilize latitude and longitude to explain climate around the world. -Homework this week includes a latitude/longitude scavenger hunt worksheet.Week 13Lesson 13Earth and SpaceAxis and seasons, gravity and motion, all affect our planet. Students will utilize a stack of pennies and a ruler to demonstrate the law of inertia. -Homework this week includes an inference worksheet.Week 14Lesson 14Solar SystemComets, meteors, and stars. Besides planets, what else lies in our solar system? This week we look to the stars to see what is outside of our planet. -Homework this week includes a drawing and a report on a star constellation of the student's choice.Week 15Lesson 15Semester ReviewUsing a fun gameshow and class discussion, students will review the last 14 weeks of class. Teacher feedback is sent to parents at the conclusion of the class.
- Students will be able to explore through lecture, experiments, demonstrations, homework, and discussion the five fields of Earth Science....astronomy, geology, environmental science, meteorology, and oceanography.
I was a middle school science teacher for 10 years. I have also homeschooled and graduated my daughter for 10 years and she is currently a sophomore in college. As a public school teacher, I taught Earth Science, Chemistry, Physical Science, Zoology, Biology, and more to hundreds of students. Science is a passion of mine and I find performing experiments both fascinating and illuminating when learning new scientific facts! In this class, students will have ample opportunity to perform their own experiments to reiterate the information they learn in class. I have my Bachelor's degree in Biology/Pre-Med and a Master's in Healthcare Administration.
