In wars of the past, disease or infection tended to take more lives than battle itself. In this one week class we’ll look at what field doctors used at the time to try to ease the pain and suffering of these soldiers and just what they had to do to try and save the lives of these men. We’ll look how George Washington protected his soldiers from Smallpox, but we’ll also look at the other deadly diseases at the time, and we’ll peek into the medical tent of a doctor in the Civil War. Class structure is a quick meet and greet time, followed by a PowerPoint class (where students mute their microphones), followed by a question and answer period! Class is typically around an hour long, but can go long depending on how many questions the students have at the end of the class, but you’re always welcome to leave when you need!

Orientación para padres
We’ll talk about amputations on the battlefield in the American Civil War as well as look at pictures taken of the survivors of this practice years later. None of the photos are particularly graphic, but some of the information about amputation procedures may be a lot for children with weak stomachs.

Fuentes
I utilize many books and websites when researching and cross referencing my classes. In this particular class I used books Civil War Medicine by C. Keith Wilbur, An Army Nurse in the Civil War by Adelaide W. Smith, The Practice of Civil War Medicine and Surgery by Bruce Allen Evans M.D., and Revolutionary War Medicine also written by C. Keith Wilbur. Websites I often use to research are History.com, Britannica.com, and Smithsonian.com.
