Adding and subtracting fractions matters in math, even in college. That includes mixed numbers as well. It really can be done. It doesn’t matter if it has been tried and/or failed in the past. Here's what will be covered:

Week 1: Adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators
Week 2: Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators
Week 3: How to add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators
Week 4: Addition and subtraction of mixed numbers with unlike denominators
As needed, converting improper fractions to mixed numbers will be presented or reviewed as appropriate.

Future math courses will at least occasionally require this knowledge. Learning about fractions will help with decimals and percents. All three make learning other math much easier.

Even though this is a course based on addition and subtraction, it uses multiplication and division. Please get in touch (preferably before the first day) if a student is uncomfortable with those concepts. Help will be provided if it's clearly needed or at the parent's request.

The age range is intentionally set so that much younger students will not be in the same classroom as your child. The teacher is approachable, kind, patient, and quite human yet not a doormat. Classmates are allowed to help one another. Questions can be asked at any time during lectures, classwork, or outside of the classroom. Siblings must enroll in separate sections so they can develop individually in the subject.

Notes should be taken to help with classwork and homework. Classwork can be done individually or as a group. Homework is expected to be completed individually. There are no books. Worksheets are provided. Students may be called on in class. Outschool rules and those specific to the course are enforced starting the first day. Reviews of topics are periodic. Students' progress is informally assessed for their comfort.

My classes cover basic math and pre-algebra for teenagers with or without unique needs. There are two series available for that. Contact me with any concerns about whether your child is suited for the course content despite age or experience. Private classes are also available.

While educating K-12 marginalized and underserved youth, it wasn't long before I specialized in requests for math help due to demand. That was preceded by 16 years in STEM as a test, maintenance, and repair technician specializing in electricity, electronics, instrumentation, and automation for process control and military aviation.

It’s never too late to learn something no matter what anyone else says or thinks. A student is far more than mistakes that matter less and less over time.

As a kid, I used to hate math because I didn't have mastery of it. My mother was terrible at it but insisted that I do better. She won. I liked how useful math became. It's been working for me ever since, and I want my students to do at least as well.

I look forward to helping your child finally overcome math issues.
