It is important for students to understand how math relates to the real world. In this class, students will learn how the concepts they're learning in the classroom affects their real life. Each week, students will use various math concepts to work through different scenarios that adults face in the real world. This class will be good for students needing to review math concepts or see how math is used in real life. We will walk through each problem step-by-step, so new students will benefit from this class as well. *Unless otherwise noted, we will be using US customary measurements and American money.* Week of May 8: Kitchen Substitutions You're working your meal plan for the week, but the problem is you've discovered most of your measuring cups and spoons have disappeared. You'll have to modify every recipe to the measuring cups and spoons you have. Math concepts covered - Converting fractions, measuring utensils in the kitchen, equivalent fractions, common kitchen conversions Week of May 15: Gratuity Your family has visited a lot of restaurants, hair salons, and other places that accept gratuity. Your job is to evaluate how much is being tipped. Math concepts covered - Changing percentages to decimals, multiplying decimals, calculating gratuity, adding Week of May 22: Grocery Store Mayhem You're all managers of a grocery store, and the registers are down! It's up to you to help the employees count back the correct change to the customers. Math concepts covered - American Coins/bills, adding money, counting back change Week of May 22: Self-employed Struggles You've decided to open up your own Etsy shop and sell your handmade crafts. You've got to figure out how much money it costs you to make each of your items, and then figure up how much you should charge for your items. Math concepts covered - Logic, adding, subtracting, creating equations Week of May 29: Growing a Garden You're getting ready to plan a garden for your family. Before you get started, you have to figure out how much space you have, how much you need to plant for your family, and what to plant. Math concepts covered - Area, perimeter, logic, multiplying, adding Week of June 5: Cooking for a crowd Your family loves your cooking so much that you're going to be hosting this year's family reunion. The problem is all your recipes are for a family of four, and so you have to party-size all your recipes. Math concepts covered - Fractions, adding fractions, increasing recipes, simplifying fractions, multiplying fractions Week of June 12: Extreme Couponing You're trying to save up for vacation, so you're saving every penny you can. That means using coupons and shopping the sales. Math concepts covered - Logic, changing percentages to decimals, multiplying decimals, calculating discounts Week of June 19: Kitchen Remodel You've decided to remodel your kitchen, but there's a lot of work to be done! You have to measure the room, figure out which appliances will fit, and more. Math concepts covered - Reading a tape measure, area, perimeter, logic
