In this multi-day class we will use 100's grids and number lines to look at how fractions, decimals, and percents are connected. This class will meet 3 times in the course of one week for 55 minutes to look at how they are equivalent. This class will be taught with the students actively placing numbers on number line, converting between the three, looking for patterns and connections and lastly they will design their dream bedroom using 100's grids. Below is a schedule of what each day will entail. To complete this class students need to have a basic understanding of fraction and decimal connections and how these numbers fit on a number line. Day 1: Students will look at visual representations of how fractions, decimals and percent are related. We will spend the first part of our class discussing the everyday uses of fractions, decimals, and percent. The second section of the class we will look at the different ways that fractions, decimals, and percent can be represented. We will discuss the definition of fractions, decimals and percent as we complete a class discussion. The discussions will include visual representations and students will make connections with previous and new learning. Students will then complete activities using 100's grids to determine and develop patterns to represent different fractions, decimals, and percents that are equivalent. During the third section of the class we will look at fourths and eighths and how they convert using 100's grids. Students will conclude the class by completing a fraction and percent equivalent chart using 100's grids. Day 2: We will look at fractions on number strips and where common fractions would be located on the fraction strips. In the third section of our class we will play a fraction, percent equivalent game. The game will be run as a whole group with the teacher putting pieces where the student wants to place their number on the number line. Students will need to explain to the group their reasoning for placement. In the last section of this class students will complete fraction and percent problems as a whole group. Students will be given a copy of the questions before class. Students need to have a basic understanding of where fractions fit on a number line. Day3: Students will use 100's grids to design their dream house and place furniture in their favorite room or two. They will complete a furniture layout in drawing using 100's grids and determine the fraction, decimal and percent that is used for each piece of furniture and determine they amount of unused space. Supplies needed for this class: Materials printed from classroom, Pencil or pen, Graph paper to create 100's grids, and colored writing tool of some kind (crayons, markers, colored pencils)
