SUMMARY OF THE CLASS In this 3-week, course students will meet 3 times a week to learn the perfect structure for 3 different types of essays. Essay writing is so important for students to master in middle school. If they can master the structure of a 5 paragraph essay that will help them with their schooling for years to come. Unit 1Reading Response EssaysReading Response Essays3 lessons1 WeekWeek 1Lesson 1Reading Response Essays Day 1In this lesson, we will read an analyze our mentor text: "The Cremation of Sam McGee." Students will also learn about figurative language, logical appeals, and repetition. Lastly, we will talk about how to write a introduction paragraph for a reading response essay.Lesson 2Reading Response Essays Day 2In this lesson, we will listen to our mentor text read by the original author. We will also talk about mood, tone, and rhyme in the text. We will cover the structure of body paragraphs in a reading response essay and students will be writing the body paragraphs for their essay.Lesson 3Reading Response Essays Day 3In this lesson, we will be finishing up reading response essays. Students will learn about theme. We also will cover fallacies. Lastly students will learn the structure of a conclusion and will be writing the conclusion for their reading response essay.Unit 2Compare and Contrast EssaysCompare and Contrast Essays3 lessons1 WeekWeek 2Lesson 4Compare and Contrast Essays Day 1This lesson introduced compare and contrast essays. We will be comparing different subjects in school. Students will pick the subjects that they want to compare. We will talk about how to write the introduction to a compare and contrast essay and students will write the introduction to this essay.Lesson 5Compare and Contrast Essays Day 2In this lesson, student will learn how to use a venn diagram to brainstorm for compare and contrast essays. They will also learn about the different ways that they can lay out their body paragraphs in a compare and contrast essay. These include the alternative method, block method, and integrated method. Students will them write the body paragraphs for their compare and contrast essay.Lesson 6Compare and Contrast Essays Day 3In this lesson, we will be looking at the conclusions for our compare and contrast essays. Students will learn two methods for writing conclusions. (Restate thesis, Summarize, Universal Statement) (5cs method: Close the loop, Conclude, Clarify, Concern, and Consequences). Students will then write the conclusions to their compare and contrast essays.Unit 3How to EssaysHow to Essays3 lessons1 WeekWeek 3Lesson 7How to Essays Day 1In this lesson, we will be introducing our topic of how to make your favorite food. We will also start class off with an activity where students will have to write a paragraph telling me exactly how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and I will make it exactly how they said to. This teaches the students the importance of details in a how to essay. Students will be writing the introduction to their how to essay in this lesson.Lesson 8How to Essays Day 2In this lesson students will learn about sequential order and what it means for how to essays. Students will then be writing the steps for their how to essays with details and sensory language.Lesson 9How to Essays Day 3In this lesson, we will be talking about inventions that changed the world and how those things live on because someone wrote down how to make them. We will also be talking about conclusions for how to essays and students will write their conclusion.
- By the end of this class, students will know the structure of these essays and will be able to understand the difference between these essay types and how to recreate them with other prompts.

Frecuencia: incluidoComentario: incluidoDetalles: Class time is going to be focused on how to write these essays this means that students will be called upon to write the essays outside of class. All essays will be written outside of class and students should plan to take 1-4 hours to write essays for homework each week.
Students will need to have something that they can take notes and write essays. This can be digital or paper and pens.
Students will need to use some kind of word processing software for their choice to write their essays. They then will have to send them to me in the Outschool classroom. I may use a Kahoot to review the concepts on the last day of class.
