This course was made one of the chosen nominees for online course of the year in 2023. The winner will be announced on November 24, 2003 in the Guildhall in London UK. this class, I will be teaching the students what it takes to become a professional published writer. This is something I have been doing for the last three years. I currently have 16 students in three different countries that are either: already published, actively becoming published, ready for publishing, or new students wanting to be published. My students are both traditional and self-published authors. I have worked with students ages eight through 16. I am proud to add that the majority of my students did not speak English as their primary language. I was able to help students write incredible manuscripts that had no prior knowledge or understanding regarding the semantics of writing the English language.
I begin the class, by having every student write me a one page essay based on a writing prompt I provide. Students are also welcome to write their own essay without a prompt. I ask the students to write the one page essay prior to our first class, so that I can get a solid understanding of their writing ability and level.
Every student goes through the following mandatory trainings and coursework prior to writing their manuscript. Our class week consists of three one-hour classes on three separate days The first week of class will be structured like this:
Day 1.
Plagiarism training and introduction to Copyright Law (We will discuss the meaning and history of plagiarism and what to do to prevent it from occurring. We will then discuss what a copyright is, why it is necessary when publishing a novel and how to go about registering and applying for a copyright on literary works properly and legally.)
Brainstorming strong and effective narratives (The students will learn tips and tricks to help find the genre/sub-genre of their book and how to write a story that is of interest to them personally)
Day 2.
Defining Setting, mood, and characters ( How to create an effective outline for all three prior to writing)
Identifying and remembering your audience
Day 3.
The importance of Feelings and passion in everything you write
How to blueprint a novel
Traditional publishing versus self-publishing.
The second week will be time for the students to decide and finalize what their personal novel will be about and immediately afterwards they will get started on creating the outlines and blueprint that we learned about the week prior.
Day 4.
Play the writing prompt game (This class will be used to play a narrative creating game interactively with other classmates and the teacher. This game teaches students how to tap into their creative side of their mind and also gives perspective on how other people use their creative genius)
Day 5.
Discuss top novel ideas and narrow it done to final decision.
Day 6.
Create the four outlines and blueprint on novel topic chosen.
The third week we will begin writing. Students will spend weeks three through seven doing the same pattern. It will go like this:
In class, we will outline and plan what will be written. Then the student will write the agreed upon amount for homework. The next time they come to class we will spend the class time editing the writing that was done for homework and then outline and plan again. Repeat. This will continue until the end of week seven.
The eighth and final week for this class, we will spend setting up all of the official paperwork and discussing if the student will be taking the traditional, self-publishing or choose both options so we can begin getting their novel copyrighted and set up accordingly to being globally distributed. This class will set up the student to have everything they need to get their novel published as an e-book, soft-cover, paperback and several other printing options if interested. The students are able to put everything in their own names as minors in the United States of America. The parents can put the copyright and the publishing paperwork in their name but that is a personal decision for the family to make. The students work will be monetized following the steps and set-up I will be showing and teaching them. The only fees are for the copyright standard application which is between $45-$65 at the time on www.copyright.gov and then there is a $4.99 fee that will be needed to distribute globally on all of the major online book retailers, (i.e. Amazon, Google Books, Apple Books, Scribd, Barnes and Noble, etc.)

I am always going to do what it takes to make sure that every one of my students succeeds, becomes published as an author, and meets any other academic goals they presently have. When a student gets writers block, I work diligently with them one on one to make sure we get past it. I have never encountered a student or a story that I couldn’t find a creative solution for. It is imperative that the student clearly wants to become a published author and knows their reasons why they want this and why they are here. It will be necessary to write in the manuscript outside of class as well. It is a lot of work but the pay off is huge. The student will get monetary gain from this after their literary work is officially published. Every student will need to apply for a copyright which takes about four weeks and can be applied for after the writing is finished, but before the editing and proofreading begins. This works out very nicely because editing and proofreading will take around that four week time frame to finish. I have all of the information necessary to make sure everything goes smoothly and I am happy to help any student during any part of the publishing process and that includes paperwork. I am a very high energy teacher with lots of creative output. I have a drive to see all of my students succeed. I love my students very much and it is very clear that they are my number one priority.

Students will need to type their manuscript in either a word document or Google docs. The student will need to send me their work so that I am able to manage and ensure that everything is going as it should. I do prefer students have a Gmail account so that way I can place them in my Google classroom and we can also share the document through Google docs very easily.

We will be going through the federal governments copyright website to understand the application process for the students copyright so that they will be able to receive the publication per the publisher's requirements. Also, the copyright legally protects the student, who is the original creator of the literary works. They will be receiving monetary gain from this and therefore will need to go through the proper channels via the website www.copyright.gov.
