Experiencia de clase

In this class we drawn an imaginary map of the North Pole. This is a fantasy map and not a realistic Artic circle map. Our map will contain both real geographic features (like mountains, trees and rivers) and imagined elements - such as a penguin school, an ice dragon cave or Santa's workshop. The map we draw will contain essential map-making elements and you will learn skills to represent them clearly on paper: geographic symbols, a map key and a compass.

Class Structure:
I will show examples of imaginary maps of the North Pole that include Santa's village and other fantasy places. We will see Santa's house, the toy factory and gift wrapping hut - and small streets that lead to a candy cane forest and ice palace! Our map might show a penguin hotel and elf café, a gingerbread house and reindeer landing strip. At the end of the class you have the opportunity to share your map if you want.

This class provides a creative framework for your child to explore the world around them and learn graphic ways of representing their imaginary ideas. Through the activity of drawing maps your child learns to solve problems and to present solutions on paper. They will pick up map skills that empower them to draw visual representations of spaces they have in their mind.
Metas de aprendizaje
Benefits of map making are:
- Topographical skills: Children are able to use directional labels such as north, south, east, and west
- Projective skills: Children are able to use their own position to determine a location and its relationship to other elements
- Euclidian skills: Children can accurately perceive spatial relationships such as those that are used on a paper map
