In this class we explore underground and hidden cities that were created in history and discuss why they were built, and how they functioned. We look at specific features, such as air shafts and traps, found in underground structures and why they are useful. We examine different graphic options to represent depth and layers. Everyone will then draw their own underground city which includes essential features such as security, air and water sources. We will draw and discuss visual solutions on how to best represent our ideas, for example through scale, colour coding or compass coordinates. This class provides an imaginative framework for your child to explore the world around them and learn graphic ways of representing their spatial ideas. Through the activity of drawing maps your child learns to solve problems and to present ideas and solutions graphically. They will pick up map reading skills but the focus is on exploring visual representations of a specific space. At the end of the class we will look at our work and share how our underground city functions. Metas de aprendizaje
1. Learn about ancient underground cities.
2. Develop the imagination and learn graphic design communication skills.
3. Learn concepts of scale, measurement, and the frame of reference for maps.
Benefits of map making are:
- Topographical skills: Children are able to use directional labels such as north, south, east, and west
- Projective skills: Children are able to use their own position to determine a location and its relationship to other elements
- Euclidian skills: Children can accurately perceive spatial relationships such as those that are used on a paper map
