Maybe you use Lego to build worlds, or you have a radio control car you want to automate, or you have an amazing invention idea. Microbit can take these toys to the next level. Learn how combine code and engineering to become a maker. This course requires intermediate skills in code and building. We will explore toy hacking, the engineering design process, and robotic coding to create unique projects. Code and engineering skills are valuable in the workplace and this is a good place to start exploring the fun and exciting world of maker skills. This is a "code and build" with me class. I will plan and adjust for the supplies and skills that students bring to the class. Class 1: Microbit review We will review the basics of microbit coding. We will become comfortable with the use of microsoft make code and the code writing process. Class 2: Reverse engineering We will dissect common toys and discover what electronics can be used and how they might connect to the Microbit system. Class 3: Maker Drive Maker Drive is an affordable microbit accessory. It allows us to power toys while still taking advantage of the Microbit sensors and logic. Class 4: Maker Project Finishing We will explore how your project can be made to look polished and presentable like a professional prototype!

Microbit is essential to the course. You now have the option of getting the original board or Version 2, which has more features. If you have 2 Microbits, more can be done for control! I included a motor driver for robot control. This is also essential. Connecting the microbit and the driver requires alligator clips and jumper wires. The final item is an existing toy that has electronic components. This could be lego or a radio controlled car or something else.

I’m Cody Creed.
I have been a teacher for 15 years in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I have a passion for STEAM education. That is the combination of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math.
For my classes, these ideas come together in maker skills, art, and coding. I’m proficient in easy to learn, low barrier graphic coding but I’m also comfortable with some other code languages.
Beyond teaching, I make robots and perform as a puppeteer. These projects have to go beyond code and engineering. They need to have personality.
