Get ready to - Flip! Rotate! Slide! Tessellate! In this session you will learn how to create beautiful artwork and see how artists even use these skills in the real world. In this ongoing class we will learn the process of geometric transformations. A geometric transformation involves the movement of an object from one position to another on a plane. The movement is accompanied by a change in position, orientation, shape or even size. Classes do not need to be taken sequentially. Each week's geometric transformation activities are a great opportunity to learn and combine Math/Art! Examples Include, but are not limited to... Week 1 - Use of plane 2D shapes to create a drawing. Applying geometry to real life concepts. Week 2 - Drawing straight lines to create the appearance of 3D images. Understanding of angles and vertices. Week 3 - Using lines and color shading to create beautiful images. Introduction to artists like M.C. Escher. Week 4 - Designing a cool perspective drawing. Students use lines and shapes to create the illusion of 3D image. Week 5 - Becoming an architect when drawing a cityscape. Use principles from previous weeks to design and draw. Week 6 - Students will complete a Rotation (Turn) activity that we will do by first converting a square into a parallelogram. We will then rotate this quadrilateral around a single point. The result is a beautiful windmill. Week 6 - Students will complete a Reflection (Flip) activity which will include a review symmetry and line of symmetry. Students will receive a grid paper before class to perform this reflection activity. The result will be an interesting symmetrical design. Week 7 - Students will complete a Translation (Slide) activity. Students will use a plane white paper to create a patterned tiled effect. They will enjoy coloring it in a unique way. Week 8- Students will complete a Tessellation activity, learning about M.C. Escher and his work. Seeing how to combine or double the transformations to create works of art. Week 9 - I Love M-Art- Geometric Heart Project! This Geometric Heart is a fun lesson because it marries color theory and geometric math concepts! And, looking forward...3D Design *Students will create cubes, prisms and pyramids. *Students will create spheres and learn about shadowing. *Students will create cylinders of varying heights.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will have a better understanding of geometric shapes and their attributes. They will learn the benefits of taking time to draw lines with precision and care. Students will gain a sense of pride and accomplishment in their completed math inspired artwork.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
2 Grado
Maestría en Educación desde University of Phoenix
Licenciatura en Educación desde Northern Arizona University
I have over 20 years of experience teaching grades 3 through 8. I hold a bachelor’s degree from Northern Arizona University, where I studied Elementary Education. In addition, I have a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction. My classroom environment fosters imagination, growth, and experimentation. Students feel safe exploring the learning process, and proud of their accomplishments. My passion for teaching many subject areas, but particularly math, reading, writing, arts, and SEL is quite evident as I often believe in weaving the disciplines together in a cross-curricular approach. I have attended many reading and writing conferences over the years to keep up on the most current literacy practices. In my free time I enjoy reading, journaling, blogging, and writing poetry. Sharing this passion with students is a tremendous joy!
