In this five week book discussion course with Kayla Stierwalt, students engage with five young adult novels with different types of love stories. Each week we discuss a new book. The teacher guides the discussion through thoughtful questions, and the students explore the topics. These include the structure and strength of the types of love stories: forbidden love, fake dating, gothic, tragedy, and fairy tale retelling. Students also examine the books' characters, themes and overall stories. As students explore these story types, they can see what elements work in each one and what they prefer as readers and why. They also will learn how to recognize similar stories and recommend read-alikes. The novels include: Everything Everything by Nicola Yoon To All the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han Anatomy: A Love Story by Dana Schwartz The Fault In Our Stars by John Green A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer The schedule is: Week 1 (January 22-28): Everything Everything Week 2 (January 29-February 4): To All the Boys I've Loved Before Week 3 (February 5-11): Anatomy: A Love Story Week 4 (February 12-18): The Fault in Our Stars Week 5: (February 19-25): A Curse So Dark and Lonely

These novels include teen characters who occasionally mention or participate in sexual activity and drugs/alcohol. The teacher does not recommend these behaviors but recognizes that teens out there face these choices.
