In this class we will learn all about the ancient Aztec and Maya civilizations. Topics to be discussed include: food (chocolate, maize, and agave), language, culture, cuisine, sports and we’ll view artifacts that can be seen today at the Museum of Archeology in Mexico City and in Oaxaca (excavations from Tomb 7). We'll be learning about geographic fingerprinting, LiDAR technology, new technologies that are helping archeologists uncover more about these incredible empires. Class breakdown (these are approximations): 5 Minute check in, 10 minute slide show/presentation, 10 minutes question and answers, 10 video clip, 10 minute discussion, 5 minute reflection and sharing. If time permits, I will touch on the Inca. PLEASE NOTE: I've been adding 5 extra minutes to all of my classes as students really benefit from socializing at the end of class (but I don't want to take away from our learning time).
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will improve their understanding of the Aztec and Mayan Empires, the symbols and become familiar with artifacts found in Monte Alban, Tomb 7.

Orientación para padres
In the past, the subject of sacrificial practices has come up in this class. Many students are intrigued and curious (justifiably so!) about such practices. The rationale for Aztec human sacrifice was, first and foremost, a matter of survival. According to Aztec cosmology, the sun god Huitzilopochtli was waging a constant war against darkness, and if the darkness won, the world would end. In order to keep the sun moving across the sky and preserve their very lives, the Aztecs had to feed Huitzilopochtli. The theme of sacrifice may be mentioned in the DK Aztec and Maya book, but I don't spend time discussing the subject due the sensitivity of the learners. I encourage adults who have curious learners to have open discussions with them. I would be happy to send supplemental information and links with (age appropriate) information/lessons as well.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I teach Spanish on OS and have been a teaching artist for over 15 years. I recently spent 3 months visiting different temples (the Aztecs called them Teocalli) throughout Mexico (my birth country) and am enthralled by Aztec history. I recently edited a in-depth presentation that was given by an archeologist at a temple outside of Mexico City (on my youtube channel).
