Little Lit Learners is designed to help children develop reading comprehension skills with a focus on building vocabulary, oral language, improving comprehension, and fostering a love of reading. Each lesson will be 45 minutes long and focus on the following skills: Vocabulary Building I will introduce new words through engaging stories and activities. Comprehension Identifying main ideas and key details, prediction and inferring. We will also focus on story elements such as character, setting, plot, and theme or central message. Reading Fluency I will model good reading, with prosody and appropriate rate, demonstrating how to read with confidence and expression. Storytelling and Sequencing Each week a portion of our lesson will focus on retelling stories in the correct order with a beginning, middle, and end. This will also build student's oral language, and provide them an opportunity to use the new vocabulary they learn through speaking. Interactive Activities There will be a creative element at the end of each class where students will draw or create to reinforce comprehension and vocabulary skills from the day's lesson. Each lesson will follow a structured format: Warm-up Activities (5 mins) A game or discussion to begin the session and get students comfortable sharing their ideas. Read-Aloud Time (15-20 mins) Modeling expression and comprehension, strategically pausing to question and think aloud, modeling how a good reader thinks as they are reading. Interactive Discussions (5-10 mins) Questions and prompts will encourage students to think critically about the story, asking and answering questions and making connections to the text. Activity Time (10-15 mins) Drawing or group game to reinforce comprehension skill and vocabulary focused on during the read aloud and lesson. Wrap-Up (5-10 mins) A quick review of what we learned and a sneak peek at the next week's book. My teaching style is centered around what is developmentally appropriate for students, interactive, and supportive. I believe in creating a welcoming environment where every child feels comfortable and safe sharing their thoughts and asking questions. I use a lot of visuals, hands-on activities, and positive reinforcement to keep students motivated. I aim to make every lesson feel like an exciting adventure into the world of books!

I have over 18 years of experience in public education in both classroom and administrative roles. I spent 9 years teaching kindergarten and 4 years working with preschool-aged children. Currently, I serve as the literacy curriculum coordinator for our local public school district, where I oversee and support literacy instruction across kindergarten through 6th grades. I also have extensive training in the science of reading, and I understand how important early literacy exposure is to reading development.
My extensive experience in early childhood education and literacy development equips me with the knowledge and skills to help young learners build a strong foundation in reading and comprehension. Throughout my career, I’ve worked directly with children in classroom settings and in various educational roles, allowing me to develop a deep understanding of how to engage and support young readers in their learning journey. I greatly appreciate the opportunity to support you in building your child's love for reading!
