"Billy has long dreamt of owning not one, but two, dogs. So when he’s finally able to save up enough money for two pups to call his own—Old Dan and Little Ann—he’s ecstatic. It doesn’t matter that times are tough; together they’ll roam the hills of the Ozarks. Soon Billy and his hounds become the finest hunting team in the valley. Stories of their great achievements spread throughout the region, and the combination of Old Dan’s brawn, Little Ann’s brains, and Billy’s sheer will seems unbeatable. But tragedy awaits these determined hunters—now friends—and Billy learns that hope can grow out of despair, and that the seeds of the future can come from the scars of the past."

Students will need to purchase the book, "Where the Red Fern Grows" by Wilson Rawls for this class. Please have your child read the first FOUR chapters in the book before the first class meeting.

Welcome to book club camp! This tween book club is perfect for having storytime with well-written literature. In this 6 day book club camp, students will independently read "Where the Red Fern Grows" by Wilson Rawls. Before the book club camp begins, students will read the first FOUR chapters in the book ready to discuss on the first day of class.

Thereafter, each class will begin with a fun and interesting "question of the day" critical thinking prompt related to the assigned reading. Students can briefly discuss any initial thoughts they had on the assigned reading. Then, the teacher will engage the students in an "order the events" activity, a "prediction" activity, and several critical thinking prompts that lead to exciting discussion and ideas on the character's behavior and choices. At the end of class, the teacher will assign chapters to read independently before the next class meeting.

Here is the class schedule:
