This course offers an exploration of the intersections between language, biology, and technology. From understanding how our bodies produce speech to analyzing the neuroscience of language, child language acquisition, and the impact of metaphor on thought, students will gain insight into the mechanisms and meaning of human communication. This course covers a wide range of topics in linguistics, starting with the biological foundations of speech production through articulatory phonetics and the unique features of human language compared to nonhuman communication systems. Students will explore acoustic phonetics and its applications in speech synthesis and voice-to-text technologies, as well as the neuroscience behind language processing in the brain. Additional topics include child language acquisition, the cognitive and cultural significance of metaphor, and the role of discourse analysis in fields like forensic linguistics. Together, these topics provide a comprehensive overview of how language functions biologically, socially, and technologically. This class is structured as an interactive, in-person course that combines engaging lectures and group discussions to deepen understanding of each topic. Each week, students will participate in collaborative exercises, analyze case studies, and explore real-world applications of linguistic concepts. My teaching style is highly interactive and student-centered, focusing on engaging learners through a mix of lecture and discussion with some hands-on activities. I incorporate visual aids like slides and video clips to explain complex concepts, while encouraging questions and discussions to ensure understanding.

más de 7 semanasLección 1:
Articulatory Phonetics and the Digestive and Respiratory Systems
We begin by exploring articulatory phonetics, focusing on how our digestive and respiratory systems perform dual roles in sustaining life and producing verbal language. This session includes demonstrations and group discussions on the physical mechanics of speech.

Lección 2:
Nonhuman Communication Systems and Groundbreaking Primate Studies
We examine nonhuman communication systems and what distinguishes human language from them. We will also discuss key nonhuman primate studies and their implications for understanding language evolution.

Lección 3:
Acoustic Phonetics, Speech Synthesis, and Voice-to-Text Technology
We look at the physics of sound waves in speech and explore how recording technology is used to convert speech into text and synthesize voices.

Lección 4:
Language and the Brain
We return to biology with a focus on the neuroscience of language—how the brain processes and produces language. Topics include key brain regions involved in language and what happens when they are damaged.

Orientación para padres
During the class on language and the brain, I will screen share images of a real human brain as well as video of endoscopy of the trachea to see the voice box of a person speaking. If your learner is squeamish about seeing human anatomy (brain and trachea), they have the option to move to the waiting room for these sections. I will announce this ahead of time.
