Introduction to American Sign Language! Did you know that you can communicate with your hands? American Sign Language, commonly referred to as ASL, is a visual language using the hands and facial expressions to communicate. Over the course of this class, students will learn the basics of ASL communication, starting with introductory signs, and progressing to fingerspelling the alphabet. We will conclude each session with an interactive game to help students practice their newly acquired signing skills. Session One - We will go over the basic rules of ASL communication, learn several introduction signs and learn the fingerspelled alphabet from "A" to "H" along with signs corresponding to each letter handshape. We will conclude with an interactive game to review. Session Two - We will build upon our introduction signs by learning polite signs and how to greet someone during different times of the day. We'll also learn the third set of fingerspelled letters from "I" to "P" along with signs corresponding to each letter handshape. We will conclude with an interactive game for review. Session Three - We will learn the last set of letters from "Q" to "Z" along with signs corresponding to each letter handshape and practice introducing ourselves by fingerspelling our names. We will play an interactive game to review. Session Four - We will play a series of interactive games to reinforce what was learned over the last three sessions. Students will learn several new vocabulary signs pertaining to colors, animals, foods, and clothes. This is a fun way to recap and conclude our class time together while learning several bonus signs useful for beginning to sign about more advanced topics.

I have a communicative level of ASL having been exposed to the language from the age of two. For the past three years, I have been teaching ASL to 6-12-year-olds at a homeschool co-op. I continue with my involvement in the deaf community by regularly attending deaf meetups.
