"You've likely heard it said that a picture is worth a thousand words. For a developing writer, truer words were never spoken" - Bekki Lidner ~ More Than a Picture: How Drawing Develops Young Writers. Research shows that drawing helps young learners organize their thoughts and ideas and gets them ready for writing. In this class, we will be using the Art for Kids Hub YouTube channel to learn to draw. Each week we will watch a video teaching us how to draw something. After we create our drawing for the week, we will take time to write a sentence or short story about our drawing. Students will practice using proper grammar such as starting with a capital letter and ending with punctuation, as well as proper spacing between words. The idea is for students to enjoy drawing and sharing their art as well as improving their writing. Each month will have a theme and sometimes I will give them a choice of what to draw. If your child does not celebrate a holiday, please let me know and I will make sure I structure the class accordingly. Jan. Winter / New Year Feb. Friendship / Valentine's Day March - Spring animals / St. Patrick's Day/ Dr. Seuss April - Silly or Funny Pictures / Earth Day May - Flowers / sports / Cinco de Mayo June - Summer / zoo animals July - Ocean Animals August - Back to school / fairy tales / Minecraft September - Superheroes / video game characters October - Halloween / insects / bats November - Thanksgiving / turkeys / food December - Holidays around the world / mythical creatures The first weeks of January might look like: Week of Jan. 8 - How to draw a Penguin Week of Jan. 15 - How to draw an Arctic Fox Week of Jan. 22 - How to draw a Hibernating Bear Week of Jan. 29 - How to draw a Skating Panda

Welcome! Thank you for taking the time to visit my virtual classroom. I am a certified teacher offering classes in Spanish, English as a Second Language, Reading, and elementary school subjects and crochet. If you would like me to work with your child, please don't hesitate to reach out! I look forward to meeting you and your child.
When I was in high school, I had an opportunity to internship at an elementary school and from that moment I fell in love with education. I went on to get my degree in Elementary Education from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and have been teaching ever since. I started out in the regular elementary classroom and then had opportunities to teach Spanish, Reading and English as a Second Language.
I love helping children grow as learners. It gives me great joy to see them learn and achieve their goals. There is nothing better than working with a struggling reader and hearing them say "I can read this!" I believe that children learn best when they are having fun, and feel safe. It is my goal to make each child feel this way. I want them to know that they matter to me.
I was born in Venezuela and moved to the states at the age of 10. This has helped me connect with my ESL students in the past because I understand what they are going through. In Venezuela they speak Spanish, which is why I feel comfortable teaching Spanish to young learners. I have 3 kids and I decided to work from home so that I could enjoy as much of my time with them as possible. Time flies and I want to continue working in education and encouraging children to find a love of learning.
