This will be a two part seminar, during which we will take a deep dive into the rich and fascinating history of the Salem witch trials. The class will be lecture based with some discussion. I will also use images and short video clips to enhance the students' understanding of the topic. In the first class, we will begin with a brief history of the town itself, and the community divide between Salem Village and Salem town. We will discuss the religious beliefs and practices of the Puritans during that time period. The second meeting will be a deep dive into the actual trials. I will introduce the people who were involved, and the various aspects of their characters and lives. We will then go over the events of the trials in great detail. There will be the opportunity for students to ask questions at any time. Students will then learn about the outcome of the trials, and the impact that this particular dark chapter has had on society today. There will time for the students to think about the relevant cultural impacts, and discuss them.
