This course is designed to introduce students to the fascinating world of coral reefs. Over four lessons, learners will explore topics like reef formation, the diverse groups of organisms that inhabit reefs, the intricate symbioses that sustain these ecosystems, and how food webs inform conservation efforts. Each lesson will consist of an engaging presentation and a take-home activity to reinforce the topics discussed in the course. Presentations will feature colorful slides and video clips from my own research as a marine biologist. Activities range from critical thinking questions to illustrations. Learners will have a choice between types of activities (writing vs. drawing) to accommodate diverse learning styles and interests. My teaching style emphasizes curiosity, connection, and active participation. I strive to create a welcoming environment where students feel comfortable asking questions. I will be available to answer questions through messages or one-on-one sessions outside of class.

In this lesson, you will learn about where coral reefs are found, how they grow, and how they protect our coastlines. Lección 2:
Reef Residents
This lesson is all about the diversity of life on coral reefs. You will learn about the most common fish and invertebrates (think octopuses and lobster) and their roles in these diverse communities. Lección 3:
Symbioses in the Sea
This lesson covers symbioses seen on coral reefs. You will learn about cleaning stations (a type of mutualism) and why fish visit them (parasites!). Lección 4:
Food Webs
In this lesson, you will see how all of the creatures you've learned about fit into a coral reef food web. You will also learn how food webs help researchers assess ecosystem health and stability. Otros detalles
