During this class, students will listen to a story about a lake. We will discuss things we can see near and on a lake. Students will be able to share their experiences of being near the water (lake, river, ocean, sea) if they chose to. During our reading, we will practice comprehension skills as we think aloud and the students are engaged in conversations about the story. Students will also learn some vocabulary words about things on and near the water. After our story and discussion, children will have the opportunity to make boats that we will "set sail" in a bowl of water. If your child is able to bring the supplies listed below, I will show them how to make boats in class. Supplies aren't required for class and I will still show them how to make a boat if they decide to do so after class is over. Students will learn about forces that can affect how fast the sailboat moves. We will also talk about "sinking" and "floating." I encourage parents to be close to their children during this lesson if you want your child to make the boat. I believe that students learn best when they are actively engaged with discussions and activities so this lesson will help them understand more about boats! I hope to see you soon in class!

Lista de útiles escolares
If your child would like to make a boat, we will be using these supplies: 1) container of water to float your boat in (big enough for your boats to float around in) 2) 1-2 pieces of square Styrofoam (it's best to be at least 1/2 inch thick) OR 1 apple (I will demonstrate in class how to cut it so please have a parent nearby during this part of our lesson if you are going to make a boat) 3) colored construction paper 4) markers/crayons 5) scissors 6) wooden skewers (cut down to around 6 inches long) OR toothpicks OR 2-3 sharpened pencils (toothpicks/wooden skewers work best with the apple)
