In this class, students will explore basic fraction concepts using household toys with a certified teacher. Fractions can be a tricky subject, but with visual and tactile examples, students will make deep connections and enhance their learning!

• We'll start with vocabulary introduction or review -- Students will learn and model the terms numerator, denominator, fraction, whole number and equivalent
• Then, we’ll model and name several basic fractions -- ½, ¼, ⅓ ... etc.
• Students will demonstrate understanding of equivalent fractions by building same-size models with different numbers of pieces.
• Finally, students will compete in a fraction challenge, quickly building and sharing their own models!

Students will build and create throughout class, and they will have ample opportunities to share their creations!
Metas de aprendizaje
This class covers fraction basics, up to and including these third grade common-core state standards:

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.NF.A.1
Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.NF.A.3.B
Recognize and generate simple equivalent fractions, e.g., 1/2 = 2/4, 4/6 = 2/3. Explain why the fractions are equivalent, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.

Several LEGOS or LEGO-Like bricks. I will be using 2x8, 2x6, 2x2, 1x3, 1x2 and 1x1 bricks. I suggest pulling out several of these basic bricks, and leaving the mini-figures, wheels, and other specialty pieces out of class time.

Student models will be flexible, for example, they can use 2 bricks of two different colors but the same size to show 1/2. One learner might have a purple 2x8 stacked with a white 2x8, while another might show a yellow 1x1 stacked with a green 1x1. Both show equal halves!

A notebook or scratch paper and something to write with will also be helpful.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
In my classroom, students will find specific elementary education topics in an engaging, personal, welcoming format. I can help young learners delve deeper into a reading or math skill, learn something advanced, or get ready and build confidence for school! I believe students learn best when their teacher meets them where they are, gives them choice and voice, and guides their growth.

I have been an elementary school teacher for 5 years, teaching English as a Second Language online for three years, and working with kids since I was a teenager. I’m a mom to two young boys and 3 pets, and I love teaching and learning with kids of all ages!

I also love to doodle and paint, as well as cook, read, garden and travel. I have traveled all over the USA, and even taught and lived on a remote Alaskan island! I have additional degrees in journalism and law, and consider myself a lifelong-learner. I would love to share some of these skills and interests with your students on Outschool.

I can’t wait for students to explore their interests, build their confidence, and develop their passion for learning with me! See you in class!
