In this ongoing class, we will learn about creative writing and art in a fun and interactive way. Using Legend of Zelda as inspiration, we will draw and write stories about Link, his enemies and more. The teacher will also play the game in class, providing tips and tricks for fellow players. We will travel across the Hyrule together, learning vital English skills along the way. Each week we will cover a different topic related to creative writing. We will learn about characters, setting, tone, plot, sentence structure, audience, revision, peer review and more. Classes will also include input on grammar, vocabulary and spelling. Although the core academic focus is creative writing, we will also practice our art skills. We’ll learn how to draw everything from characters to swords to enemies and more. We’ll also read from various Legend of Zelda comics and learn how to create our own! The goal of this class is to use the learner's passion for video games and art to teach them creative writing. I want students to have fun while expressing themselves. Students are not required to own a Nintendo Switch. The structure of class will be similar each week. We will start with a drawing exercise to gear up for class. Then, we’ll dive into a mini lecture about creative writing, followed by a class discussion. From there, we will go back and forth between live game play and the lesson, using the game to help us learn about creative writing. Every class will end with either a writing task or a drawing challenge. The writing task is designed to give learners consistent practice and get them familiar with writing standards. The drawing challenge is for learners to practice their artistic skills and be creative. There will be time to work during class, but learners may have to finish their assignments outside of class. Learners can share their completed work with me for detailed feedback and advice on next steps. Each class will use a variety of teaching methods to engage every type of learner. Classes will include quizzes, games, worksheets and more. Learners will be challenged to question what they know and draw connections between the game and the real world. 🕹 What is taught in this course? 🕹 Week beginning 7/10/24: Different types of fiction + How to design your own sword Week beginning 14/10/24: How to write great villains + How to draw a Rito villager Week beginning 21/10/24: The 'zoom in and slow down' method + How to draw action Week beginning 28/10/24: Strong paragraphs + How to moblins Week beginning 4/11/24: How to write suspense + How to design a village Week beginning 11/11/24: Creating a three-dimensional characters + How to draw a Goron Week beginning 18/11/24: Scene vs. exposition + How to draw landscapes Week beginning 25/11/24: Writing with our 5 senses + How to draw animals of Hyrule Week beginning 2/12/24: How to write exciting dialogue + How to make a LoZ comic Week beginning 9/12/24: Experimenting with point of view + How to draw a sky island Week beginning 16/12/24: Different types of conflict + How to draw a Zora Week beginning 23/12/24: What makes a story…a story? + How to draw the Master Sword Week beginning 30/12/24: Characters in stories + How to draw Link Week beginning 6/1/25: All about settings + How to draw a map Week beginning 13/1/25: Planning your story + How to draw Zelda Week beginning 20/1/25: The SWBS method + How to draw the Hylian Shield Week beginning 27/1/25: Writing a journey + How to draw a TerryTown home Week beginning 3/2/25: All about tone + How to draw plants Week beginning 10/2/25: How to critique someone's writing + How to draw Hyrule fashion Week beginning 17/2/25: Characterization + How to draw Tulin Week beginning 24/2/25: Story elements + How to design your own armor set Further topics to be added. 🕹 About my Qualifications 🕹 I have been an English teacher and tutor for more than 7 years. Hello! My name is Kristin, and I absolutely love teaching on Outschool. My goal is to build engaging classes centered around my two passions: writing and science.
Although writing and science seem like two completely different topics, they can be taught simultaneously to build a deeper understanding of both subjects. For example, I offer an ‘Essay Writing Through Scientific Exploration’ course, in which students study fascinating science concepts, and then write structured essays about their findings. Whether your learner is a scientist or a writer, they will learn new skills while deepening others.
I have been an English teacher and tutor for more than 7 years, and I have two university degrees in English and writing. This experience allows me to offer a variety of entirely writing-focused courses as well. I offer both ongoing classes and semester-long, full curriculum courses in writing and English language arts.
I have to admit, some of my favorite classes are creative writing classes. I've been writing creatively since elementary school, and I think telling stories is so much fun! I’m a published author, and I love sharing my passion with learners.
In terms of science, I have been a STEM teacher for more than 3 years. I trained at the NASA Glenn Research center, where real engineers taught me the best principles for teaching STEM to young students. While working for my local library, I hosted a STEM summer-day camp, ran a weekly science club, taught students how to use 3D printers, and coached a LEGO League.
My journey as an online teacher began as an ESL teacher with VIPKid and Magic Ears. This gave me essential skills to make virtual learning impactful. Ultimately, my varied experience allows me to make classes that are specific and unique, while simultaneously engaging and fun. There is a lot to cover, but my hope is to offer a curriculum that no other teacher has before.
When I'm not teaching, you can find me writing, reading, playing video games or baking. (Especially bread.) My favorite thing to do is hike with my best friend. (Who happens to be a 60-pound puppy named Gus.)
