Engaging Group Discussion Class – Learn, Think, and Share!

Welcome to an exciting and interactive learning experience where students will explore fascinating topics through engaging discussions! In this class, learners will actively participate in conversations that encourage critical thinking, creativity, and comprehension.

Class Structure:
This class is structured as a group discussion, where students will engage in thought-provoking conversations. The teacher will provide guiding questions and prompts to ensure all learning targets are met. Discussions will be supplemented with notes, book excerpts, note catchers, and slideshows to reinforce key ideas.

Teaching Style:
I am an upbeat and passionate teacher who believes in making learning engaging and interactive. My goal is to create a welcoming space where every student feels encouraged to share their thoughts and build confidence in their ideas.

Learner Interaction:
Students will engage with both me and their classmates throughout the class. Interaction will include:

-Guided discussions with teacher-led prompts
-Group activities to encourage collaboration
-Note catchers to help organize thoughts and key takeaways
-Slideshows and visual aids to reinforce concepts

The biggest thing I ask of students is that they come to our book club ready to have open discussions. These books contain some material that will invoke strong emotions. While everyone may not always agree, I want us all to be able to have a conversation and express opinions freely. Any student not being respectful will be asked to leave the group.

The individual books, or the entire series, may be purchased on Amazon or in a bookstore. 

The series is quite popular, so it is likely the books will also be available to rent from school and public libraries! 

Students will need their note catcher and a writing tool (notebook and pencil or laptop) for class.

I have 3 years of experience teaching language arts. While teaching 6th grade, we had to spend 2 months on dystopian novels. The stories provided by the curriculum were outdated and irrelevant to my students. In order to engage my students and help them enjoy our dystopian unit, I chose to use one of my favorite books: Legend. 

The enthusiasm my students showed for this book was monumental. I had students from other classes requesting to borrow my copy of Legend to read it on their own. My students were engaged in every lesson and willingly discussed the intense topics of the books. I had never seen an entire class so invested in a novel; all 22 students came into class excited and prepared to continue with our work.
