Math word problems are normally the biggest difficulty for a new algebra student. Sometimes there is a mismatch between math skills and reading level (especially for those who love math). Sometimes, the logical side of a learner and the intuitive linguistic side of a learner have difficulty coming together to work as a team. In a few cases, the difficulty is just a matter of learning some new words. Other times, it's the "math talk" syntax that can be difficult. We address each of these issues with overall content and individualized help in 4 consecutive days. This is a great way to get student prepared for algebra in the Fall. In a typical class: First: a small word and math puzzle that can be worked on while we do the check-ins and preparation. Second, a short lecture on the day's math topic (see below). Third, working problems and puzzles on the board interactively. A short amount of reading homework will be assigned the day before each class. Over the 4 days of the class we'll cover: 1) matching English words with math symbols; 2) sentence diagramming a math word problem (a somewhat unique thing that I teach); 3) traveling problems, including vocabulary, the d=rt formula, and drawing pictures; 4) economics problems, especially vocabulary (a common request for help, e.g. "in the black"), ending with a group math game. Prerequisites (all reviewed or taught in my Pre-Algebra course): 1. Solid arithmetic skills; 2. Familiarity with the number line; and 3. Basic experience with variables.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
My goal is to help students make the transition from the arithmetic and memorization stage into the analytical problem solving stage, thereby setting a solid foundation for all further scientific work. Thus, my courses will focus exclusively on: Algebra, Geometry, Logic and the open source Computer Science Unplugged curriculum. Knowing the growing importance of programming in all technical disciplines, I plan to incorporate some advanced ideas that are within reach, e.g. floating point arithmetic and using Algebra to track units of measure.
I was very lucky to have an extraordinary elementary, middle and high school math education. I received a BS in Mathematics from Western Washington University, which included courses in the Moore Method, one of the original "flipped classroom" styles. Currently, I am a part-time MS student in Applied Mathematics at the University of Washington. I recently taught math games, CS Unplugged, Logic, and other activities to the 4th graders at my kids' school, so I've had a chance to practice with this age group.
I will offer a year-long course covering all of Algebra I and Algebra II (these courses have a lot of overlap so this is not as hard as it sounds). Algebra will be initially offered week-to-week so that students can be sure that my style of teaching works for them.
And In my picture I'm playing a cowbell.
